Recording a shop

I am wondering I have to do a detailed shop and I am not sure I can remember all the info I need to ..... someone suggest to me to record my conversation via my cell phone with the car dealer so I can remember everything I need for my report but that doesn't seem legal. Can you do that?

I know you don't like being told to read the information already provided, but this time I am including the link. The post was written by Walesmaven who has been video/audio shopping for ten years or more.

I read that post the other day I am asking say you have a shop with a ton of detail you have to remember and your memory is not that best is it okay to have a recorder on to get all the details so you can be as detailed for the customer as possible. I am just going to erase it after I submit my report I just don't want to get all the information correct
I am just trying to figure out how to remember all the information for a shop I need to do
The post discusses audio recording, which is the issue, and provides a link. The information is true regardless of whether it is a recorded shop or you are recording for your own purposes.

"Q. I understand that it’s not legal to do video or audio recorded shops in some places. What do I need to know to be safe?

A. This is an issue that is very often misunderstood. There are 14 states, called “two party states” where recording another person without their prior consent is illegal, and may even carry criminal penalties. As you might imagine, news reporters have to keep up with these laws, so there is a special site that reports on audio recording laws. The site is maintained by a legal team, so many of us rely on it. It lists 13 two party states. Add Delaware to that list, out of caution. Notice that this only covers audio recording! I do not have further information about this site."

I take it you are in one of the two party states? Some people have still found it helpful to use a recorder even if they cannot record the target. You can record information like when you entered/exited and even while you are alone waiting. I've found it doesn't help me getting direct quotes, but a lot of information I might forget later can be captured while I walk to my car.

If you are new to MS'ing and you have memory issues, maybe you should cut your teeth on other types of shops besides car dealerships, fine dining, high-end retail or hotels. They usually require LOTS of details including quoted conversations, accurate timings and pages of narratives. Once you become more comfortable and your memory improves (yes, MS'ing can improve your memory) then you can spread your wings into the more advanced shops.
Sybil has a good point. A lot of members have commented on how much better their memory has gotten the more they shop. Being in a one party state I have always utilized recording at home. It still surprises how rarely I actually use the recording because most things are written strictly from memory, even reports 24 to 48 hours later.

Indeed you do. And technically, if you make a phone call from PA to a one-party stated, you would need their consent. And a warning (again) to those in one-party states, if you call from your home state to a two-party state, the two-party consent rules are in effect.
