New and confused.

Hi everybody. I'm new to the world of mystery shopping and to this forum. I have only done a few assignments in my area and I really enjoyed it. However, before I start accepting more of this type of work and spend my time and money, I am wondering if anyone can tell me what to do if one day I have a problem. I tried looking it up be need some help. Is there anything that regulates Mystery Shopping companies? Are there law (like labor laws) or some kind of authority that looks over all this? Is there anywhere I should check out for companies to avoid and sites similar to this one where mystery shoppers share the word? What is stopping mystery shopping company from making me do the work, using my report and then simply refusing to pay me? It's all a little vague to me. I read a lot about "scams" and I think I have avoided them, but I could use any help I can get. Thanks!

First, I would not sign up for any company that asks for money.

Second, all reputable companies are listed in one (or more) of these three places:
MSPA website: [www.mspa-na.org]
The link at the bottom of this page
Volition website: [www.volition.com]

Third, many/most/all of the reputable companies are members of the Better Business Bureau and proudly display it on their pages.

I am fairly new as well 3 months) and by simply making sure each company is listed on one of the above three locations, I have yet to be ripped off with approaching 200 shops. Do be careful: each company has its own rules and guidelines and, if you don't follow them, they could refuse to pay you. However, I have not had that happen as of yet. Also, each company has its own pay schedule: Sometimes you'll be paid in less than two weeks. Sometimes it takes three or four months.

Good luck. It's fun.

Hard work builds character and homework is good for your soul.
I suggest starting in the Kudos forum -- you'll be able to quickly see which companies other shoppers have had positive dealings with. Then search the words "ten foot pole" and see what to avoid.

Now scheduling travel shops for the day after Christmas through mid-January.
