Have any Merchandising books been published?

Hi Guys!

I have not posted on this site before, but I would like to enlist your assistance in a project. I am attempting to determine if there is a need for a book to be published on the topic of Merchandising. We have several wonderful books concerning Mystery Shopping, but I have found nothing dealing with Merchandising.

This broad heading would include not only the background of merchandising and the actual work associated with it, but all the aspects involved. For instance presented under the heading of resets would be the different types of layouts, fixtures, walls, planograms, etc.

I am looking forward to reading all comments, negative as well as positive.

I agree completely. If, or when, the stars get in perfect order and you are entrusted with knowledge to pass on to others, be graceous enough about it to pay for your advertising. Word of mouth is okay in some instances, but not when taking up space better used for helping others to not fall into the same pits you have.

I have followed this forum for several years without joining or posting. While I'm not exactly sure who 'dee shops' is or where you are located, I have always appreciated your insight into whatever anyone else is having a problem with. I may be wrong, but are you from Hawaii?

I thought so. I was lucky enough to be able to visit the Big Island in August of '09. I only got to stay for 4 days and was looking forward to knee surgery 2 days after I got home, so I wasn't able to walk very much, but loved everything I saw. After that run on sentence I'm sure you are wondering why in the world I think I can write anything. I made many pictures of the open air airport located on the Big Island. (We don't see much of that here in the Mountains of Eastern KY.) I am probably not using the proper English when speaking of that Island, but I only have 'The Bounty Hunter' as an example of speech in referring to it and I was told he was thought of as pretty much a 'Joke' over there! Ha! Ha!
it would be very hard as we all sign ICA's and its a slippery slope determining which is protected knowledge and publishable

but if its something you feel go ahead by all means

as to the others its impossible to advertise something that doesnt exist yet

If books still sell, go ahead. I suppose anything is possible with kindle, which I don't have yet. I still underline when I read. Another aspect of merchandising is why we do it. Why do we put low-priced products at one level and high-priced ones at another? Why are some products put near others that look like them but have different brand names? Why are packages of various sizes put in different shelves? Why do we do cut-ins? Why are some products ribboned on the shelf? I think the general public would be interested in that. I think that a little advertising history would help, too.

When people ask me what merchandising is, I say, "It's when people who don't work for the stores change things around on the shelves so you can't find them anymore." That usually gets a laugh. If they are still interested, I tell them we do auditing and inventory, too, and that we sometimes stock. Almost nobody is interested beyond that, but if they were, I'd answer the questions above.

I had an incident that the store manager thought was hilariously funny but embarrassed me. A customer told her that there was someone "taking labels off of shelves." What if that customer saw me elsewhere and thought I was a thief?
well im sure those labels are very valuable on the big box store black market tongue sticking out smiley

I am going to steal your answer, "It's when people who don't work for the stores change things around on the shelves so you can't find them anymore."
