Forum Messages "Greying Out" and font sizes shrinking!

Well, is THAT the cause for the greying out of certain members' threads, and of the shrinking fonts??? If so, wouldn't Jacob have some sort of say-so over who get this magical "button"??

I see a little thumbs down now that I did not see before. I was also wondering about the fading to grey and disappearing comments. Just save those kitties!
Well, if Jacob wanted us to keep this a secret, I guess the "kittens" are out of the bag now.
I've reviewed Jacob's posts and I find nowhere that he asked that this be kept secret.
Okay, but a well-respected forum member earlier PMed me and asked that I edit my post (a few posts back) since Jacob had requested it be kept secret...so I complied and edited with "Nevermind."
Oh Chris, you didn't have to delete. There was nothing offensive there.

Shrinkage can be funny or not, depending on whether we are talking about my height as I get older or some other things for other people...errr...

Jacob may have asked others to keep it secret. I was not asked to keep it secret. And I am assuming that you were not asked to keep it secret. If Jacob PMs to ask me to keep it secret, I will edit my posts. If the other forum member produces something that Jacob wrote requesting that it will be kept secret, I will edit my post. It does not appear to me that Jacob wants it kept secret although I could be wrong.
No, I wasn't asked to keep it a secret, and I wasn't chastising anyone or suggesting that they needed to edit their posts.
Oh my.... I just fell off my chair laughing!!!!

I did see that some of Dave's posts on the Sentry thread were gray even though they were respectably worded (an offer to clear up an editor's remarks or something). I couldn't help but think that some people here voted him down just because they didn't like him. On the other hand I can see the value of it when a discussion gets out of hand. An offensive post may be voted out sooner than a mod could get to it.

Edited to add: offensive post = personal attack, for example.

I would not call it or consider it a "disagree" button. A disagree button would be like a "like" button. Members names would be seen along with the post. In this case it is the opportunity for some members to anonymously and without justification influence the disappearance of other members posts. Since I have yet to see any firm guidelines on using the button, it can be used on spam, trolls, suspected trolls, members you have an irrational grudge against, posts that have gone off topic, humorous posts you don't find particularly funny, for revenge, and apparently to turn orange kittens to gray.

Anybody here on the Forum actually have access to a "Disagree" button in the threads???

If you want something to be kept a secret, you don't post it in a public forum.

"Do women know about shrinkage?"
"What do you mean, like laundry?"
"No..."
"Like when a man goes swimming... Afterwards..."
"It shrinks?"
"Like a frightened turtle."
"Why does it shrink?"
"It just does."
"I don't know how you guys walk around with those things."

Sorry for the delay in clearing this up. Kimmiemae has this right. It's just a test right now, and I'm not sure we'll keep it. The hope is that it will discourage trolls that keep making an appearance here. I don't want it to be a very commonly used feature in the forum.

Any and all thoughts / feedback are welcome.

I'm thinking Jacob found a way to implement his idea that he mentioned in this thread:

"Here's the solution I've thought about. It's not exactly a disagree button. But, it's a similar button. If enough people press the button, the post would become less visible. If even more people press the button, it might be hidden and referred to the moderators, and if even more people press the button, the post would be removed altogether. In addition, I could set it up so that this button would not be available to everyone, maybe just members that have been around a certain amount of time.

If I did this, I wouldn't be able to implement it right away. But I think it might help filter out the more offensive/combative posts. "

Thanks for putting a stop to all the speculation. In theory, it is a good idea. In reality, it is already being abused by some forum members. Certain forum members are targeting other forum members' posts whether or not there is anything negative or offensive in a particular post.

Also, when a post receives so many "thumbs down" votes that it disappears, the following posts might not make sense anymore. I am referring to that CYBERBULLYING thread written in ALL CAPS. The OP's post has disappeared so it now looks like another forum member started the thread. Maybe there could be an "automatic post" in place of the disappearing post stating the the offending post is being removed.
I'm surprised that no one liked my Seinfeld shrinkage quote above. I am heartbroken. I will curl up in a ball and cry now. Thanks everyone. tongue sticking out smiley
It does not seem to me that there was anything in Dave's post that deserved graying out, much less deserved a comment about it being so grayed out it was hard to read.

I suppose a disagree button will be used as a weapon against those not liked or supported. It's real unfortunate that we regard ourselves as professional and objective when actually we're sometimes juvenile and vindictive. So here we are, using our disagree button (which I hope was meant for trolls) against legitimate posters.

That button may be a problem and not a solution. In any case, it's a neat little item for driving out dissenters. Did I spell that correctly? Not that I care. Go ahead, y'all. Gray me out.

I got a great idea. Give the button guys two buttons each. That will help them get rid of us troublesome and edgy posters twice as fast. Or can they hit the single button they have now over and over, so they can totally make someone they don't care for disappear even faster with no help from the rest of the button guys? Never mind. I'm sure it's going to happen fast enough.

So long y'all, and happy fade out.

I was the one who mentioned it being hard to read because I was not the one who minimized the comment. It actually surprised me to find it that way. I also happen to agree with you Mary, there was no discernible reason for it to be minimized.

Not that anyone asked, but I vote no on this whole thumb's down button.

I think it is a bad idea(or maybe a good idea with a bad execution). It discourages any opinion which doesn't match that of the unnamed elite. I think it will make the forum a less inclusive and less inviting place. We can toggle posters and the real trolls are run off already.

At the least, each down vote should have a name on it, so there is some accountability.

Geesh! What did I do THIS time? Let's see, I wrote about men's shrinkage and kitties and a response to Jacob's post. I didn't know that I was not allowed to give Jacob feedback after he specifically said "any and all thoughts / feedback are welcome." I guess that does not apply to me, huh?

Bring on the grey and the gray!
Is it necessary to have a “button” at all? The members are fully capable of running off trolls without assistance. smiling smiley

I think the anonymity of who has the button and who doesn’t is causing some members to become defensive, and other members might wrongly conclude that so-and-so pushed the button when there is no way to know.

If names are associated with the button, I’m afraid there will be flame wars when posts are “kittened” or grayed out. Maybe more moderators are needed to catch threads that go off the rails?
Well, I'm sure getting my question about the "greying out" answered!!
Now.....How about the fonts shrinking....is that part of the process too??? As in, the more something is greyed out, the more the fonts start shrinking???

If those with the "buttons" are in the know about the teeny-tiny fonts, does that happen after being greyed out to a certain point till they shrink???

Anyone remember the B&W 50's movie, "The Incredible Shrinking Man"??? Sort of reminds me of that!! ha ha...and NO....I'm NOT talking about any particular body part!! The fella walked through some sort of unknown gas and began shrinking.....he ends up living in a doll house, and this spider, which is now HUGE to him, walks over him, and he sticks a sewing needle in the underside of the belly, and all this gunk comes out!!!

I would hate to see anyone here shrink to the point of having giant spiders walk over them with gunk oozing out from their bellies!! ha ha.....oh my, I've gotten so far afield thinking about shrinking fonts!!!
