Good grief, no. Is that really what the instructions tell you to do?
They would probably boot you out if you tried standing behind the counter. I have had C-store assignments that required me to comment on whether they had pornography. If I didn't find it out in the open, I would stand in a position where I could see what was behind the counter, such as a cabinet, magazines, supplies, etc. Some stores are built so a customer can do that. Others make it impossible.
I recently did a gas shop in a really nice area ($800,000+ homes) where the barrier glass completely surrounded the cashier, and I had to use their mounted scanner to scan my own purchase! I had never seen that before.

I'm surprised that a high-dollar area needs that much security for just a store. It's usually the crime-ridden, low-income areas that have all the visible security measures. One of my local gas stations has a sign that says, "We trust you." Customers can pump before they pay. It's probably for the chain, the one that is at Wal-Marts.

Just the ones where you have a 25 page info sheet to follow and check off if the logos has been changed the colors are good and how the snack shop inside doing. buy something for 2.00 then evaluate, come back and identify yourself as the mystery shopper thats gonna be in your business for an hour
