Are 5 Guys Burgers and Fries Franchises?

There are several in my general area (50 mile radius). These are all always on the site to shop. However the one right in my neighborhood, that I did a few times a year or so ago, has not ever been back. This makes me wonder if they are franchises and this one chooses not to participate in MS anymore. Does anyone know? thanks,

Carol

I asked a manager when they newly opened and was told they were all corporate owned. Some of the stores in Florida are franchised but are in the process of being purchased back by corporate.
My stepson worked for them at a location for a while here in Northern California and the were owned by a group of folks who were franchisees and wanted to open a lot more.
Some are corporate owned and some are franchised, depending on area. I know most in the Northeast are franchised.

The ones in the Dayton, OH area are franchised. They now have 4 and are going to open more.
They're all franchises in my area. I am no longer able to shop my favorite location, as it never appears on my available shops list. I finally concluded it was because I had shopped it so many times, and/or because I had given it so many glowing reports. This particular location is a model franchise because of the way the crew treats their customers. It's possible they fingered me as a shopper, but of course the MSC has given me no indication. Incidentally, the owner of this franchise also owns another location that I continue to shop regularly.
They more so than normal burger joints are on a super hunt to find the shopper. For sure. Order a pretty standard ketchup and mustard to not set off an extra white flag. And do not take a dining partner with and share. That is a huge tip off .

When you have a cash cow like Five Guys, you don't franchise. Franchising is a way to dump the startup costs, risk, and labor requirements onto a small family. As a result, they even pay 7-15% revenue direct to the franchisee plus additional fees.

Recap:

Cash cow (Chipotle, Five Guys, Pinkberry) = 15-40% profits, internally funded
Franchise (Quiznos, Dunkin Donuts) = 15% or less profits, funded by franchisee
Locations here are franchisees. It doesn't appear that there are many, if any, territories remaining in the U.S. Shopped one today. Yum.
I remember a news story of a group here on the West Coast buying the rights to open here. They may have an exclusive in CA.
