CA gas!!!

For those of you shopping CA (like me):

How is this HUGE jump in the cost of gas affecting you? Local news says the cost will go over $5.00/gal this month. I went to fill my car yesterday and found my 'cheap' station closed! I have since hesitated to take any shops in these circumstances -- you? Any thoughts/words of wisdom/insight?

The effect that it has had on me is that I am more selective in choosing my assignments.

You poor thing! It's not so bad here in the Tampa Bay area. I just checked Gas Buddy and found one for $3.53 nearby. I just hope it stays down there or goes lower, but I've been limiting my area for accepting shops for a long time.
It's so bad and I am so glad I am retired. But, what about people who work every day and have to drive. I am concerned about my daughter and her getting from A to B with job and kids.

Apparently one of our refineries has shut down so the price goes up. I wonder how many stations take advantage of
the situation and hike the prices "just because".

Let's hope and pray it goes down as fast as it went up. I'm in So California.

How high is it where you are????

I just filled up for $4.59 a gallon

Cali has a large amount of environment regulations so my guess is they are lacking refinaries. I think its the lack of refinaries combined with some recent refinary problems that is leading to a shortage. $5 a gallon is horrible.
If I lived there, I would shop much, much less.

If the location is 30 miles away and back, and you have a 10 gallon tank, (50 bucks fill) it seems half your profit will be lost in the gas..

Or do my shops on a bikesmiling smiley
Try this one on for size:

My SUV gets 9 mpg in the city, and has a 25 gallon tank. I filled up yesterday for $4.79/gal.

I haven't been taking any shops under $30. I have been doing $75 auto shops with 2 different MSPs, and $50 banking shops for another MSP, so I can justify the driving for these.

I feel fortunate that I live in a big city where there are so many high paying shops. I feel for the people that are in more rural areas where there are less shops, and further to drive to get them.

the gas shortage will only effect the clean air states of CT, NY and CA unless they waive the requirements. Numerous refineries that produce that special blend for these states are offline.

From what I read the shortage is almost over. Now we just have to wait and see if they actually reduce the price back to where it was. There was one refinery fire and another refinery without power for at least a day but I understand they are both back refining new supplies today so the shortage should ease up this weekend..And to top that all off they had slowed production just before those two problems happened in anticipation of switching from the "summer" formula to the "winter" formula at the end of the month so supplies were low to begin with. I rushed out this morning to fill my small tank and paid $4.29 but that same station was at $4.55 a few hours later. I hope my small tank will get me through until the prices return to their normal high price. The stations which closed I heard did so because they refused to purchase the gas at the current high prices so any station running out just did not order more. The costco's were not buying more fuel. One station in the valley did buy more fuel yesterday and they were charging over $6 a gallon because that is close to what they had to pay the refinery. I wonder if anyone stopped there?
It's a good time to get your bike out or take the bus if there is one in your neighborhood.
Glad l dont need to shop. Im shutting down till the price start to go down. We already planned our vatcation and yes were driving next week. Bad luck to start a trip to Reno 220 miles away. Might have to pick up shop on the way back.
You Americans have cheap gas! Try up in Vancouver, BC where we have the most expensive gas in Canada - $1.58 per litre-almost $6 per gallon.
You really have to plan your trips well and bundle shops up here!
Gas prices have made it to the point where some shops just are not worth taking when I factor in gas, time in car, time during visit and time doing report. That doesnt even count wear and tear on the car/car repairs.
I started another thread on this, yes, I am effected. i am cancelling a job for Monday, as gas jumped another .12 overnite.
Once this starts it lasts a long time. For my 5.00 fee and 14.00 food reimbursement, I'd spend over 10.00 on gas. Just not
worth the time. I am lucky I did a dealership in my town, and we have a huge auto row, so will be doing those, I'll only work
in my town. Prices for jobs are not as high here as Steve mentions in the city, but, that's the breaks. Still I notice jobs are
being taken, shoulda bought a V-4.....

Live consciously....
The refinery problems are being resolved, and hopefully, Governor Brown is going to sign a bill that would allow oil companies to distribute the winter fuel blend early. It really doesn't matter though; the damage is done.

As they say: Gas prices go up like a rocket, and come down like a feather.
According the The Nightly Business Report, California refineries did not produce enough of the "summer blend" to cover the time when they are out of production switching over to the "winter blend." They are now mostly ready to produce winter blend, but not yet allowed to market it. The governor is being asked to suspend the clean air rules briefly so that new winter blend can go on the market early, to meet the demand.

Poor customer service? Don't get mad; get video.
I have two shops Downtown LA this morning. For the very first time, to save on gas and parking, I'm gonna take the subway to go complete these shops.

Taking my printouts and a pen in my pocket, and will just find a place to sit and write notes afterwards. I usually get back into my SUV, and idle it with the A/C on.

However, I have a shop in Beverly Hills this evening, once I return from downtown, I will drive my truck to BH and do some valet parking, and pamper myself again.
