Video shops

I know this has been covered before but as technology changes constantly I will ask again. I have seen the first video shop on a job board for my area. Wow I am blown away by the pay of $200. I would have to buy equipment so any suggestions of what is good but not too expensive for these shops would be great. I know lots of you do these shops and wondering where a good place to get the equipment would be. Also since this would be uncharted waters for me please share with me your thoughts on doing video. Are they difficult for beginners to get done correctly and are there many companies going to this? The other consideration is would it be worth it for me to purchase the equipment. Thanks in advance for your help and thoughts.

On the "New Shoppers" board, there is a discussion about video and audio recorded shops.

Video is not for everyone. The equipment will run between $600-800. The acceptable equipment is a PV-500 with a button camera. The best advice I can offer is to do your first few video shops with a MSC that will loan the equipment. Also each type of shop is different so don't assume that just because you like a video car shop that you will also like a video senior living shop. Get at least five different video shops under your belt before you make the decision to invest in the necessary equipment.

Thank you for the great information. Now I take the WOW for the payment amount back. I did not expect the equipment cost to be so much. I think you are right I may have to research which companies loan equipment. My budget will never allow me to put that much out especially since this is the only video shop I have seen in my area. However, that could be due to the fact I am not signed up with companies that do them, at this point it is hard to tell. I do appreciate the information though.
Here are a few companies that have video shops:

Business Observations
Clear Evaluations
Gamefilm Consultants
Impact Marketing
Instant Replays
Melinda Brody & Co.
Sinclair Customer Metrics
The Shadow Agency

The cost of the equipment is one of the reasons video shops pay considerably higher than others. It is a big investment and the cameras do have to be replaced. In fact, the wiring for things like the actual button camera can be delicate.

Equal rights for others does not mean fewer rights for you. It's not pie.

And, if you're going to get serious about video shopping, you'll eventually invest in a second set of equipment. Also, you'll need some way to safely store and transport your equipment. Here's a link to my solution [from Issue 42 of Mystery Shopper Magazine]:

I am signing up for a video workshop when I go to the San Diego conference. I too am thinking of investing in the equipment but want to make sure it is a good fit for me first. That may be a way to find out if it works for you also.
Even after you take the video all day training workshop, I suggest that you do-5 or more video shops using equipment loaned by the MSCs. The different types of video shops have very different levels of challenge. And, if you have not, for instance, done a few non-video shops of a type (such as new homes, autos, retail, apartments, assisted living, etc) don't try to start that type of shop with the video version. Get comfortable with traditional apartment and new car shops. Then do some video. The graduate course is 2+ hours long assisted living video shops.

This really is not for everyone. YOU are being recorded, so there's no arguement about when the shopper screwed up, lol. So, start close tohome, so that if a shop is denied you won't be losing a lot of travel $$$$ as well as the shop fee.

James.Bond you would be appalled at how I store my video equipment. It's all in a plastic grocery bag complete with loose SD cards and the top I wear on the top of my dresser!
I used to store mine in a small travel cooler. Including the power strip happened after I was on a route of video shops where I was at an older [but nice] Econo Lodge in Virginia Beach. I had to buy a power strip so I could charge the battery and run my laptop.

Wales, excellent advice as usual. My first Senior Living shops were video...yeah talk about pressure. I would not advise that course of action to anyone.

OP, the thing holding me back on video shopping is that every time I hear it mentioned, "travel" is also mentioned, usually in the same breath. The other thing is that even the super salty video shoppers here are still doing non video retail work.

Michael,
The fees from video work free many shoppers to be much more selective about the "traditional" (i.e., written only"winking smiley shops that they accept. The minimum dollar value for active v-shoppers is usuallu quite high for traditional shops. The whole idea is to do fewer total shops, for more total dollars, is it not?

In addition, if you really want to make good money doing any sort of MS, plan on doing multi-day routes.

Both Clear Evaluations and Measure Consumer Perspectives have loaner equipment. I would suggest getting your feet wet with them first.

I am not so sure about MCP. I have emailed them several times about borrowing equipment and they have ignored my emails. That also happened to other shoppers. Sinclair, Clear Evaluation and Melinda Brody will lend equipment for nominal fee.

Cubbie,
I suspect that MCP has so many shoppers with their own equipment applying for their shops that you may not hear from them.

Like most v-mscs, they will go with known shoppers with own equipment first. Keep applying to all of the Big 7 + Epms and you will find an opening, I am certain.

I have since purchase the PV500 EVO and love having my own equipment.
