Three reams of paper, one laser toner in just 2 months...

So, the printer started flashing the low toner indicator. It has been just 2 months since I changed the toner! Well, I printed out the status page, and oh surprise! 1,432 pages printed in just a little over two months!

Our line of business is definitely not an eco-friendly once....

I usually get 4-5 reams from a toner. But I also do all my printing in "Eco" mode to minimize toner use.

I purchased an HP printer and use it for MSing rather than the Canon. The Canon was going through toner like crazy. The HP seems to be more efficient. I started ordering boxes of paper and toner cartridges from Amazon. I go through a least a ream a week.

I was using a lot of toner/ink cartridges until I realized I could print in a "saver" mode. On my Brother printer it's called "fast" print. And I do fairly well on paper since I do the front/back mode, too.

I did have to print my med. ins. provider list and went through a ream for that!
I get my paper off Staples. They have this coupon every once in a while in which you can get a full reimbursement less tax off 5 reams. I wish I could find one for the toner.

I may not shop as much as some of you, but I don't go through that much paper. For printing anything that no one else will see I use the blank side of any sheet of paper: Sales ads, misprints, my husband's business cast-offs, anything!

@Cabazan--I shop Staples, too. They usually has a free paper offer twice a year. I always take advantage of those. When I signed up for their Rewards program I got a whole case!

@rsglenn--I had a Canon a couple of years ago. Ink hog! I went back to H-P.

I too keep well supplied with paper from Staples and OfficeMax when they do rebates and/or coupons or perks that make them free except for the sales tax. As for toner, I use a place on line called SuppliesOutlet.com that will do free delivery for $100 or more order. Current coupon code of SPRINGTIME will give you an extra 10% off so my jumbo toner cartridge HP85A would come to a little over $20. But I probably use only about 4-5 jumbo cartridges per year and that is mostly coupon printing anyway.
I box a box of paper from Sams or Costco myself. I use fast draft printing if I don't need colour.

It doesn't get much cheaper or more eco-friendly than "print to file."

Am I really missing the point, or has Windows 8 decided that it'd be really silly to let us save a file with a name of our own choosing, in a place of our own choosing? Much better to save it with a random collection of letters for the filename, and let us track it down, check to see what it is, and rename it.
Why does everyone print so much stuff? I rarely print anything anymore.
If you have a tablet there with limited exception there is really no need
to print anything. You can even have them sign the authorization form
if you are doing a revealed shop right on your tablet. Double saver right
there...no wasting ink and no need to scan it or take a photo of it to upload
the form.

I'm sorry. I got off the main subject.
Good thing that happens so rarely around here

I do a lot of printing of price lists for work. My old epson was noisy and slow , so I went to ebay and the first thing I did was look up cartridges. There were Brother compatible cartridges available from various vendors for $0.80 to $1.00 each. So I looked up the printers that matched the cartridges and their reviews were good. I bought a Brother MFC-J280W and couldn't be more delighted with it. Added bonus i that I can refill the cartridges easily using a syringe, so I bought pints of the different colors for about $50.00 and can refill about 100 times. Just don't overfill !!!!
I purchased a tablet so I could avoid spending a fortune in paper and ink. I also bought a Neat desk mobile scanner. The combination of these items have made shopping a much more portable, cheaper and environmentally friendlier activity.
I copy the instructions into Word and then delete all the stuff I don't need for the actual shop, like how to write a report, scoring, etc. Plus many times the instructions are repetitive. Also using narrow margins, I can usually cut the number of pages for the instructions by half or more.

Also, I read recently that a 14-year-old won a science competition by analyzing the amount of ink used in fonts. He determined if the U.S. Government switched all its printing to Garamond they would save 24% on printer ink. So, you might save on ink if you use Garamond for your non-PDF printing.

NOTE: I'm not on the forum every day. If someone comments on my post, I might not reply right away. I've been a shopper since 1991. I've never done any work for a MS company in any other capacity.
Interesting. I publish my books in Garamond -- I think the template I got from Createspace had that as the default font. They probably save tons of ink that way. I'll have to keep that in mind. (I also like that font.)

WTG, 14 year old....

I get my toner and ink from inkjetsuperstore.com (ijss.com I think will get you there too). Refurb cartridges but a fraction of the price of OEM. I've been using them for years.

I'll have to check Flash's suppliesoutlet.com next time I need stuff. I often get $100 or more at a time. IJSS charges a flat $5.95 per shipment, no matter how much. Sometimes they have specials and they have a rewards/loyalty program.

I use double-sided printing to save paper; alternatively, I have about a ream's worth of old manuscript paper I could print on the back of. I should load that into my mystery shopping printer.

I'll have to try editing a report down to the essentials. I hate having paper printed out asking questions that can be answered from the receipt or brochures or business card. I usually skip them when making my notes right after the shop.

Time to build a bigger bridge.
Although paper has been free through Staples rebates, I decided to start using a tablet when I saw how much expense went into purchasing ink cartridges. I eliminated the expense of buying cartridges once I saw shop requirements were the only items I was printing out. One less business cost :0)
I had hoped I could use my kindle fire as a tablet for shopping but it has a funky browser and there's no way to download a different one.

Someday I'll have to break down and get a tablet that will work for this. I had an android tablet but it was a cheap piece of garbage that won't hold a charge. (Bought it at Big Lots for $69; you get what you pay for.)

Time to build a bigger bridge.
I always used fast/draft/eco/whatever mode that uses less ink, always (almost) print in b/w, and always double-sided (esp. since my printer does that automatically, without me having to turn the pages over like my old one!).

Also, I get a Staples coupon in my email every month to six weeks for a 'free' ream of paper... you have to buy it w/coupon, but get an 'Easy Rebate' for the full amount. Also that mini-box of five reams. Really awesome.

Also, for shops I'm really familiar with, I scan the stuff you're supposed to print, and if it's all the same-old, same-old, I just print the first page or two with location info & the main points. Those are put into my folder/clipboard in order each day I head out. Also ~ CHEAT SHEETS! are wonderful and paper and time saving.

But I like the idea of getting a tablet with the justification of saving on ink & paper! I might have to give that more thought. smiling smiley

Any time I have a sheet that's blank on one side, I cut it in half and when I have a stack of those they're bound into scratch pads. I go through lots of scratch pads. smiling smiley

Practitioner of the Nerdly Arts.
I had my airport route shops paper work down to 2 pages (front and back) but still carry 2 pages for 10-15 shops added weight to my carry on bag. So first I got a netbook, thinking I could maybe do some entering while on site, and put all the forms on there, That was to heavy after a while too, plus only held a charge for about 3 hours and when I was gone for 10 or more it was a pain to get the cord out etc.

So reducing the paper and weight was exactly the reason I got a tablet. And after I found the Evernote app where I can copy, or 'open', the form (and guidelines) in its original form it was even better. I was copying the form and putting it in the Notepad function but it would always have to be adjust as it only keeps text.

Now I print the confirm email, something to staple the receipts to, and I use the back of something else most times for that, or a clean paper for a signature page if necessary for audits.

Edited for clarity and I had the wrong name of the app. OOPS!

If I may join in.... why are you printing everything? I mystery shop a LOT! In fact, that is my sole income. I print the first page of the report (address time details, etc) and make hand written notes for irregular information I MUST collect. Granted, some shops do require multiple pages if you are on a reveal. For multiple shops of the same brand, I make and print a cheat sheet. It's a one inch strip done on Word (copy paste+copy paste until I have enough) then print it. I staple the cut strips onto each of the one page reports. My experience with inkjet refills was disasterous for my printer. I've switched to a Cannon laser and get about 10 months out of a $100 toner.
I don't even print that information. If necessary I copy/paste it all into my Outlook Calendar. Because Outlook links to all my devices I can just open the calendar entry on my phone or tablet and it is all there.

I noticed that, too! Let me know if you figure that out.
I just started using W8.

I don't print much anymore now that I have some experience. And when I complete a report I use cutepdf writer to "print" the page to a pdf file so I save all of my reports electronically. It's important to save them as a pdf before submitting the report since you many not be able to open it up again to print/save.
