Pet stores and shelters

I think I was reading somewhere that animal shelters get shopped, have you done it?
Anyways, my family is considering adopting a dog and we plan on making a visit to a local animal shelter. I would love to donate food to the shelter and am looking for a pet supply shop. I think I've seen it on one of the job boards but I don't remember which one. I know people here get annoyed by "who shops who" question but since it for a good cause, thought I would ask who shops pet supplies stores. Any leads would be appreciated

Hi Plusha...the shelters around here would really appreciate getting some of your old towels and blankets to give some softness and comfort to the animals there. You might want to contact your local shelter and see what they need that you might already have around your house. The dogs do not care if they have some holes in them. And instead of "shopping" for a small amount of food, why not donate some time to visit with the animals and take them for walks if that is allowed. They need as much loving as they can get.
It's not that folks get annoyed byt the "who shops who" questions...it's that it's against forum rules and it violates the ICA you agree to when you sign up with MSCs.
Simply asking who shops Pet Supply stores is not an ICA violation.

The only ones I know of, are farm/ranch-type stores with a reasonably-sized pet supply section, with a fairly decent selection and fairly good prices, in them... BestMark and Mystery Shopper Services. At least they do in the Pacific NW.

I have also seen the "super store" shops that have large pet food sections. ICCDS does those here in the midwest.

Before you do a shop to get food to donate, make sure that the shelter will accept the donation. Some will only use certain brands.
My shelter is need of some household items like blankets as well but food is definitely most needed, especially dog food. Going to dig in my closets on a weekend and contact shelter to see what they might need.

This is true, that's why I don't ask for any specific stores, although sometimes simple google search of certain client can bring you to the website of MSC that works with the client and proudly list the client on the website

Good point! My local shelter has a list of wanted items on the website and doesn't not specify any brands but its good idea to ask first.
Oh ~ I wish they did here! I'm signed with them and haven't seen those here. sad smiley

StormCloud - You are correct that Plusha did not ask about a specific place by name. I was simply stating that "who shops who" questions DO violate the rules. Now a who shops a particular INDUSTRY is a whole other thing. That's my clarification. smiling smiley

My local shelter only accepts Science Diet. Which I think is absurd. It's like saying soup kitchens should only feed the homeless steak and lobster.

They also require an application, extensive back ground checks and interviews in order to volunteer. Another absurd thing. I took those two things to mean they had an excess of money and volunteer labor and didn't need mine.

It's important, particularly with dogs, to keep them on the same food or you end up with digestive upsets and, uh, messes to clean up in the kennels.

Our shelter only uses Purina brands.

Best to ask.

The advantage of Science Diet and the other premium brands is you can feed less (cheap brands are full of fillers) which results in less poop to clean up and cleaner kennels in general. It's also less likely to have ingredients dogs might be allergic to, or that might trigger seizures in epileptic animals.

Time to build a bigger bridge.
I do not think that Science Diet is any sort of a premium brand anymore - just an old school marketing ploy
(just my humble opinion)
Science Diet is rated slightly better than the cheap brands, and no where near as good as the actual premium brands. Science Diet is not free of fillers.

Whatever. I'm sure the shelter had a reason for using it.

Not sure why your shelter is picky about food but I certainly understand why they are picky about volunteers.
They make people go through extensive volunteer application process, because they want to see determination. If someone goes through all the obstacles to become a volunteer, than this person probably would be dedicated long-term volunteer. They don't want to invest time in training volunteers who will only stick around for few week.
Customer Perspectives just sent a email today about a new client they got that includes the pet stores in my area. I think the client is a pet food brand as it wants you to find out what food the store recommends. Also, there are several different brands of stores. The scheduler said that she has to have them done by April 13 and it is a new client.
