Advice Please!

Hello everyone,

I am a newbie and have only been at mystery shopping for a little over a month. I have done about 20 shops so far and have one coming up (that's due tomorrow) that I'm pretty nervous about. This shop is with Maritz for a nationwide retailer that is a mystery shop with reveal and audit. I have never done an audit and am unsure of what to expect. How long do these normally take? With this shop, I must assess the grocery/produce sections as well as the parking lot, aisles, etc. (as you all probably know). Would it be easier to take pictures of everything no matter if they are compliant or not? Also it seems helpful that I can carry the paper form with me for the audit section of this shop so I won't forget anything but I'm still extremely nervous. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks everyone!

I have not done this particular audit, but did do some of their other reveal shops. I cannot help with the timing, but it does help to have the checklist to go through. On the photos, bring the checklist for those as well. If in doubt, take the shot so that you do not need to return later. You can delete anything that you do not need. If it is questionable, make a note to yourself so that you can ask before you submit the report. They will answer questions for you if you have them. Good Luck!
Hi Ezio,

Expect your first shop/audit to take around an hour or more. You must take a printed copy of the audit in with you after you complete the mystery portion of your shop, so you can make notations in every department as you go along. (It would be pretty difficult to do without a printed form to follow.)

The only required photos are of the overall meat department and produce department and any non-compliant issues. I would take multiple pictures of each, but would not recommend taking pictures of everything else. I would also suggest you take along a copy of the guidelines, in addition to the evaluation form. Since you're new, you might need to refer to it.

Good luck!

I intend to live forever. So far, so good.
I know which one you are talking about, did 2 yesterday. It takes about 30-35 minutes depending how effecient you are. I take more pictures than I need to. I don't take pictures of everything, but anything that is borderline, that way I can access at home.

The first one you do will probably take longer. Once you get a feel for it, you should be able to do them in around 30 minutes. Having the paper with you will help you make sure you don't forget anything. Hope for a store that is in decent shape and it should be rather easy. If it's in bad shape, hope your camera has lots of space. smiling smiley

Don't stress. Just relax and know you can take as long as you need to feel comfortable.

I haven't done one for Maritz but I have done audits for another MSC. Here's what I have learned:
* Always take all your paperwork.

* Check your camera space and clean it up the day before.

* Be sure to take along extra camera batteries and two pens. You don't want to be buying anything at the store you are auditing. (In fact, my main auditing job prohibits it.)

* Memorize what you are supposed to do if the manager or whoever objects to the audit. You don't want to have to be scrambling through your paperwork to figure out what to do in that case in real time.

* While it is good to take extra photos, my biggest time sink during my report is sorting through 250 photos for the 50 that I need. Especially in the beginning, sure, take extras. But after you have done a few, you'll know more what to expect, how your camera skills are, and how good is your camera.

* Be sure your camera has a preview function so you can check your photo of anything critical before moving on to the next shot.
What great advice from all of you! I know we somtimes tend to get off on tangents or personal vendettas but this is what this forum is all about.
I did one of these and absolutely loved it. The store though, however, had some of the worse conditions I had ever seen.

First you have to go down the aisles as a mystery shopper and then you reveal. They look nervous when you tell them who you are and follow you around a lot...The worst infraction was a guy smoking in the produce prep area, where there is food and cutting boards, I won't even go into the dead flies I saw in the food cases and extremely filthy merchandisers and frozen cases.

Enjoy!
Wow thanks so much everyone! This advice is awesome... I'm half tempted to print this out along with my audit heh heh :-)
These are some of my favorite audits. It takes about a half an hour. I suggest gloves for the freezer section because they have the coldest freezers and it kills my hands to check the dates.
I just did the first I've ever done of these yesterday. Mine took long enough that the report asked me if I was sure I had my times in right... but I went pretty slowly. I don't really care for the revealed part, out of self-preservation, but it does make it easier to be able to look at the paperwork! It also helped that it was outside my normal area and nicely bonused... since they actually wanted it done before tax season is over! Other than checking expiration dates on about a million things, it was a pretty simple deal. Gloves would have been a great idea! Fortunately, mine was clean and stocked, so that helped. Course, haven't heard back anything from the MSC, so hopefully I don't eat my words!
I got that "why did it take so long" on a gas station audit once. It was my first and I sat in the car and filled out the whole report before I left to make sure I hadn't forgotten anything, and there was one question I had missed so I was glad I stayed. So it added about 20 minutes to my in and out time because I did the report before I went "out."

Just take any audit one question at a time, try to take the pictures in the order of the questions, and check the report form before you leave the premises.

They get easier with familiarity. I'm always a little nervous the first time I try a new shop. But expanding our horizons is good. Some of the shops I dreaded the most turned out to be a piece of cake once I got into them.

Time to build a bigger bridge.
My LGG2 actually lets me upload pictures as I go through an audit. I had my LGG2 uploading each required picture and then a second camera phone taking "back up" photos of everything. I hear that the Note 3 is faster on upload however the camera is a touch better on the LGG2. I had taken the G2 because it was free with activation however I am now wondering if I should actually go with the Note 3 since it is like a laptop/ tablet/ phone speedy machine.

Anyway I digress. I was able to do my last audit in an hour and I had all the pictures already uploaded into the form. I saved the form for later review and did not submit until I was ready. When I got a moment later on, I double checked my form for any errors and then submitted it.

I used this method with my last few GFK audits as well. Talk about time saver. I went in uploaded each picture as I went. Took back up photos and was out in 15 minutes! and my report was done as well!

Just lost trying to find a fire pit in a concrete jungle wishing it was a wooded glen...

if it wasn't for bad luck, I would have no luck at all
If this is your first one, take it very slow. Take all the time you need.

I haven't done the grocery ones so I don't know how long they take.

Besides, if you start doing these on a regular basis you will be able to fly through them in no time.

I first started doing audits for Maritz and they took me 45 min. Now, 15 minutes tops.

Good luck!!

O.o o.O

Happily shopping New England and beyond!!!!!
I did my first grocery for Maritz recently. It took me about an hour. I started by taking the two required pictures. Afterwards, I audited the perimeter and then did aisle by aisle. It was fairly easy. When in doubt, take several pictures. Look to the right and left of the empty row for the product. I noticed a few times that the product was moved over but was at least one in stock. Check the dates as you move through the section.

Lastly, try not to spend time with the manager. Go in, give the letter, and start the audit. The manager for my last one kept following/approaching me and it was a PITA.
Just focus, smile and do your job to the best of your abilities. everything will be fine.
