I just had my MS shopper application turned down!

Huh!!!???

Do you suppose it's because I used my "writing sample" to point out (and offer suggestions to
correct) every grammar and spelling mistake I saw on their website?

It turned into a quite a disquisition!

Shopping Bama and parts of Georgia.
I'm still learning 24/7.
Why? The errors were SO egregious!

If they are going to hold ME to the "highest standards", shouldn't they hold themselves to the same
high standards?

I do normally wait until after I receive the "you're an approved shopper!" e-mail before sending in my corrections....one that immediately pops to mind is the one where the company spelled the "Independent Contractor" as "independant contractor"....I sent them a note, and they wrote back asking for a "screen shot" of the page I was referencing. WHAT? That was 3 DAYS AGO. I think
you should be able to find the page yourself....you know, the one that starts "Independant Contractor".

But this particular MSC had FIVE grammar errors on the page asking for a writing sample.

They probably reached the same conclusion I did -- that we wouldn't be a very good fit!

LOL!!!!!!!

They wanted to see how you write. What you submitted was more of an editing test than a writing sample winking smiley
That's awesome....you should apply again in a few days just to see if they actually correct the errors you pointed out! :-D
Another thought.........I always tell myself, they are the boss ! Don't shoot yourself in the foot.
Is the OP being paid to be an editor? I'd rather spend my time writing the best reports I can, submitting them, getting 10s and getting paid. :-D

I spent many years as a festival promoter; if I had a vendor come and tell me that they didn't like my layout's or they wanted to be located in a specific area, I'd oblige by eliminating them from the event.
Well, you have to be approved as a shopper before you can submit those reports and make $$$!

I don't want to work for any outfit that's so unprofessional.

I get to make that choice.

I have plenty of other companies that DO pay me for my work.

And Cote, I'm sure you were a professional promoter!

(I was just a little shocked, is all -- I've never had an application denied before, LOL! But after thinking about it, it's for the best -- because if that's a sample of the writing standards of their
editors, we'd for sure be butting heads. When I took the SAT (back in the day) they said I made
one error on the English portion. I sat down and wrote an essay (this was long before computers!) and actually convinced them my answer was correct, and they changed my score -- and took the
question out of later tests! So I've been butting heads for a very, very long time!)
Wow! And I thought I was anal retentive.

Cease, you don't sound like just a head butter; you sound like the HEAD head butter!!! (Humm...suddenly I'm craving buttered rolls. Can't stay focused for a minute.) smiling smiley

Oh, but missing that question was the difference between a perfect score on the English portion of
the SAT -- and a not perfect score.

And having a perfect score on the English portion of the SAT has really helped your career I see. You are doing the same type of job as the rest of us. But some of us are more successful at it since we are not shooting ourselves in the foot before we even get our foot in the door. That makes great business sense to me.

Technically yes, but you're the one who's asking to work for the MSC so you should be respectful and follow their rules. In the real world, if you applied to a company you wanted to work for, would you go to the interview and start criticizing them? Why is it okay for you to do that to an MSC?
I certainly understand looking at their website and deciding that the grammar and spelling made them look so unprofessional you didn't want to work for them. Several years ago, I registered with a company and decided not to do any shops because I was so unimpressed with the website and the company's tests. But why waste your time giving them a writing sample that corrected all their grammar and spelling? You must have a lot more time on your hands than I do. I would have just closed that website and moved on. No way would they have gotten a writing sample out of me. And, if I were going to edit their website for them, I'd want to get paid for it.
I have found a spelling or grammar error on pretty much every MSC site, app, etc. And yes, reports. I did use one report that offered a box for "MSC eyes only" to inform them of their error. No correction yet. I do find it annoying, considering they are asking their shop reports to be correct. I have to say that if you don't want to work for an unprofessional company, then the app was a waste of your time, but they got free editing.
Austin, when I edit, I get paid very well for it.

I had already gotten to the very end of the application...it was the last question.

If it had been the FIRST question, I would have followed your wise advice!

You should do what the rest of us do. Copy and paste their bad grammar and create a new thread on the forum so the rest of us can have fun with it.

Oh, I haven't seen any of those threads! And I was
afraid if I quoted directly, someone who had signed
up with that MSC would recognize it...for example,
it said in the give a writing sample: describe the
server whom served you.

Ick.

I'd like to add, for those of you who grasp the humor of this, good on you; file it under "top 10
things to NOT do if you're looking for a MSC" and have a good belly laugh.

The rest of you...well.

I work for many different reasons -- in great part because if I don't, I get pretty bored. There's a limit to how much volunteer work one can do, how many organizations one can represent, how many books
one can read, how much gardening one can do...etc., etc. It gives me a chance to meet new people
and experience things I wouldn't otherwise do. It's interesting and, to a certain degree, a creative
outlet.

And the money I earn will pay for my trip to New Zealand...

LOL is really all I can say about this whole post...

I could agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.
Personally, I appreciate this thread. I'm always highly amused by tales of this breed. I say high-five. For those of you who are totally appalled at this behavior, come on. Haven't you ever just had a moment where you had to be snarky? And anyway, if someone pointed out a lot of errors on my site, I would hop to fixing it and ask them aboard. It takes guts. I like it. I wonder how many of you have heard the story about the web security chick who got her resume turned down - so she hacked their site and they hired her the next day!

Yes!!!

I had a shop where part of the requirements was to evaluate the website of the client. Since I knew the scheduler and editor, I briefly and very kindly mentioned some of the typos and errors in their own website, just in passing. I did not receive any comment. Eventually, they had a new and improved website and to this day I count them among my favourite MSCs and hopefully they do, since they have backed me up, each and every time. I would not have evaluated their website in the early days, but I can understand why Cease had to do it.
