Big Changes at Mystery Shopper Magazine

Dear Forum Members,

I'm writing because of exciting changes we're making at Mystery Shopper Magazine. First of all, James Bond 007.5 is taking over most of the Editorial work. He's doing a great job, recruiting many writers from the forum.

We just released Issue 57, which features a very interesting article about Maritz, written by Stilllearning. We're going to be featuring Met, MichaelC, Walesmaven, Cettie, and many others in future issues.

I think it would be fun to nominate people to become writers for the magazine. For example, if we could (not saying we can), off of the top of my head, I would begin by nominating elecarev68, cindy55, Ishmael and, at least, one of the Kathy's/Kathee's and a few more.

I'm not getting any copies even thought the site stated I'm a current subscriber. Can someone look into it for me?

Sending these every-other-week might take a little of the pressure off, if any. Also, I sometimes miss them when they are posted weekly due to my schedule.

Oh, I forgot to mention Flash as a seasoned shopper.

I'm excited with the changes. Next week we have a fantastic line-up including an interview with the owner of a MSC.

Psst. I don't know if this has been done before (I just signed up), but if not--maybe a piece on EXPANDING your shops? E.g. I see lots of resources around for "new" shoppers and "experienced" shoppers, but I'm in this weird area between the two: been shopping for about a year, made about $1000 on it in nine months last year, but I've only ever done more basic shops and when it comes to expanding my horizons I'm a little lost. The friend who got me into mystery shopping lives 1200 miles away and her advice, while valued, isn't always helpful--e.g., she told me how awesome Bestmark was and how many great shops she was getting through them, but I signed up and voila, no shops here. I'm sure I'm not the only "intermediate" shopper out there who would value such help.
I agree with you ninamason, although I'm not sure what would help me. What specifically would be helpful to you?

Er, James, I just learned, yesterday, that correctly, it should be "an" MSC vs "a" MSC.

I suddenly realized that somewhere in my Chicago Manual of Style's 1011 pages I could find a definitive answer to this problem that has been haunting us all. Sure enough, Section 7.44: "acronyms and articles" discusses it thoroughly. (Possibly, a little too thoroughly!)

So, the CMS confirms the link above. "The use of a or an depends on, (or, conversely, determines), how the term is pronounced."

However, note what's in the parentheses, which seems to leave the door open for writing it either way.

Some of their examples:

an MS treatment--you pronounce it 'emm ess'
a MS in the National Library--you pronounce it 'manuscript'
an 007 field in a library catalog--you are expected to pronounce it 'oh oh seven', (and presumably you could write it as 'a 007 field' if you expected people to pronounce it as 'zero zero seven.')
a 007-style agent--pronounced 'double-oh seven.'
Wow, Ishmael that was very helpful. Thank you!

The unofficial guide for Mystery Shopper Magazine is the AP Style Manual. It's what I use in all my writing for travel articles, and other for "print" articles. Just a personal preference, but I'm not going to be nitpicking unless there's a real problem with how it reads.

When I read acronyms, I generally read it as the words in the acronym, e.g. ms can be "mystery shopper" or "manuscript" depending on the context, I read state abbreviations the same way.

Stilllearning:

I've never done anything more difficult than a TGIFriday's shop. How do you do hotels, zoos, fancy restaurants? This information must exist. There's a huge difference between "get some McDonald's" and "go to an Astros game and shop eight different vendors."

How do you plan a route?

How do you make the jump from "a way to earn treats money" to "a way to pay my car payment money" to "a way to live money"?

This could all be helpful.

Look forward to it "James, James Bond".........so long as he/she is not the head of a scheduling company already entrenched with SASSIE/Volition.

Ninamason, I can answer your question in a couple of sentences: sign up with more companies and don't be afraid to try new shops. Also, if you set yourself a goal for shopping, say, $300 a month, and be determined to make it (after considering gas and other expenses) you will likely find you will make more than that.

Most of the "die hard" shoppers here are signed up with 100-200 companies. Read back issues of the magazine to get ideas for companies you might want to work for, or, in some cases, avoid.

Time to build a bigger bridge.
Ninamason, in addition to what dspeakes said, we are putting the finishing touches on a "route shopping guide" ebook. We're also starting to kick around ideas for a video shopping guide special.
