I use Irfranview to edit photos. In that program, you can click on image then click auto adjust colors. It has worked for me. There may be something similar in the program you use, too.

I scan mine and then adjust it with darkness and contrast so it's clearer.

Irfanview is the best program I've ever used. I've been using it for many years and it's flawless.
I have had to draw over faint areas with a sharp charcoal pencil, then note the faint receipt in my comments.

Plan the work. Work the plan.
Caution! Do NOT write over receipts by drawing in the numbers to darken them. Some companies will reject the receipt based on that. If you absolutely cannot get the receipt dark enough to read, then darken it as much as you can, tape it to a sheet of paper and handwrite the information on the paper next to the receipt, then scan again. That way you have not altered the receipt itself.
Let me give you a little Tip: Market Force likely has a photo/receipt correction program, because I have submitted receipts that were faint, due to the register ink being out, on portions of the receipt. I dare not try to manipulate with my own photo program. When you click on your receipt status, miraculously the image has been professionally altered to show all the numbers. (and accepted!) I have NEVER had Market Force ask me to darken, correct, or resubmit ANY receipt.

I always wait on standby, for the extremely faint receipts. Just in case they tell me to use my program to darken it. They just never have, yet smiling smiley
I had one a couple weeks ago from a shop for Second To None that wasn't even legible. The printer must've been out of ink, because you couldn't even read the receipt. Half of it didn't even print. Luckily, they accepted it, and I didn't even get any follow-up questions. I was surprised. I was expecting to at least get an email about that.

I scan it in best that I can then I photcopy it, keep the copy and mail the original.
I'll try to increase the contrast in Photoshop, although if I do that, I do send both images.

I adjust all my receipts in photoshop. Why do you send both images? Do you stitch them together to send them?
I use the "darker" image button on my copier. Usually that makes it plenty dark enough to scan. I always keep the original also, but I've never had problems when I submit the darker image that I make on the copier.
Most photo imaging programs will have something like "Darken" mine also has a feature called "Deepen" which nicely increases the depth of color and makes receipts more legible without making the image noticeably darker. It also has more sophisticated editing such as white balance, color balance and special effects.

It is a free program called Photoscape - been using it for years, just love it.
I usually scan my receipts, but some with very faint ink work better photographed.

Most scanners use a bright white light near the glass. That's great for most situations, but can make very faint ink hard to see. Taking a picture gives you some control over the type, intensity, and shade of light illuminating your document.

I've had luck with natural daylight as well as soft-white incandescent bulbs for those hard-to-read receipts.
A printer or scanner will both do it for you. Personally I use the histogram in Photoshop. It takes about three seconds.
I send both because of good, old-fashioned paranoia...lol

I adjusted the contrast in a receipt once and the MSC wanted the original, so I sent it. Then they understood why I had adjusted the contrast. Anyhow, since then I just send both on those occasions when I need to tweak a receipt.

Gawd they never run out of ideas to torment us, do they? LOL

So far I've never had a MSC say anything about my receipts but I guess it is just a matter of time...
And just why would they assume it wasn't the original photo/scan ??

>>>I adjusted the contrast in a receipt once and the MSC wanted the original, so I sent it.<<<
I always adjust the levels on receipt scans to aid in legibility. I never alter the receipt itself except to put my name on it if it's not there (and tip amount when required). There was once on a Little Caesar's shop I made the mistake of paying in cash and got a barely legible cash register receipt. I simply maxed out what was there, sent a note to the scheduler telling him what happened, and it was accepted.
