Wow, "interesting" shop opportunity

Yep, shops that require credit check for the whopping $20 fee, and you are allowed only 3 shops. Do not worry folks. The client will also ran a credit check that will be expunged from your record, but every check during the shop will stay on your record. I can visit the same locations for at least 3 different MSs for $10, or wait for the $20 bonused that started this week, and without having any credit check. Anything less than a minimum $100 for a credit check goes to automatic delete.

That's how I feel about the $20 bike test-drives. I won't touch them for less than $80.

I wonder if the payday loan ones damage your credit. I'm not allowed to do them due to work, so I imagine they must not be great for your credit.

Plan the work. Work the plan.
I have not seen a hit on my credit thru the payday loan shops but others have said it does show up. I like these shops but will not do them for $12. Too much personal information for such a small fee. Now when they get up to $75 I do not mind giving my personal info-hehe-needs to be worth it for me.
Agreed. I was just thinking of the same thing. Who in their right mind wants to get a credit ding for $20? $500, now we are talking.
Got the same email too. No way I would screw my credit for $20. Guessing that MSC targets people with bad and ugly credit score, one click more, one click less wouldn't make a difference for them.
No one seems to be picking them up in this area. The same locations have been on the list for weeks, and yet the fee does not change.

I am NOT trying to offend anyone or comment upon why anyone does or doesn't accept a shop, but this reminded me of an old joke when I was thinking of how much money I would want to do the shop.

Churchill: Madam, would you sleep with me for five million pounds?
Socialite: My goodness, Mr. Churchill… Well, I suppose… we would have to discuss terms, of course…
Churchill: Would you sleep with me for five pounds?
Socialite: Mr. Churchill, what kind of woman do you think I am?!
Churchill: Madam, we’ve already established that. Now we are haggling about the price.

Credit checks stay on ur report for 2 yrs and lower your score for 6-12 months. You do 3 of these and you are screwed. $60? I don't think so. Pay me $150+ per shop, then maybe I'll consider it.

Have PV-500 & UE certified
My other question is how exactly the client is going to expunge the inquiry since they are just a telecom shopping their competitors? I would like to remind that in the mortgage shops that a major MS did a couple of years ago for a bank, and it took forever for the financial institution to have the credit reports cleared. Imagine how more difficult would be for a non-financial company to do it.
Yeah, There is no way they are removing inquiries from peoples credit reports. That's a violation of the FCRA and requires a lot of jumping through hoops to get those removed in a valid situation which this is not.

Also, it really depends on what your credit looks like on if 1 or 2 inquiries is going to hurt your score. Generally it will not hurt your score enough to cause a difference in rate if you were applying for a loan. More than 6 in 6 months, yes that would probably cause problems unless you were shopping for a car or mortgage. Then the FICO score combines those inquiry types into 1 inquiry when calculating.

I still wouldn't do it for $20 though....
The price this morning had risen to $25

Watch them rise higher.

@myst4au: Inre: Churchill quote. As a former UK resident, and not endeavouring to be shirty, I feel the need to dis-agree.

That is an often quoted yet false quote made by Churchill.

Winston made many statements, much quoted later on. But, he never said such a thing.

Cheers!

Tatjana - The quote has been attributed to a number of different sources, including Churchill. He gets saddled with a lot of quotes. The one I like the best (whoever really said it) is:
If you want me to speak for two minutes, it will take me three weeks of preparation.
If you want me to speak for thirty minutes, it will take me a week to prepare.
If you want me to speak for an hour, I am ready now.

The fee just went up to $35 and I got an email which said in part, "Please note that the store/s you shop will run your credit to determine what options, handsets and plans you qualify for. These are very “light” credit inquiries and will only show up as inquiries from mobile phone stores – which happens every time you legitimately shop for a cell phone or service for yourself anyway."

Well, if I was "legitimately" shopping for a cell phone, then I would accept that they need to do a credit check, and they would only do it once. For the MSC, they are going to do it twice, and I wouldn't get a cell phone at the end.

Considering this is a soft pull for cell service, I don't see what the big concern is over the credit pull side of things. Hard pulls (applications for credit, etc.) affect your credit score negatively (temporarily), but soft pulls have no effect on your credit score.

In fact, if you have a ton of soft pulls or inquiries, they can eventually bump off the hard inquiries though I believe the number required is huge (close to 100).
At the hyphenated cell phone company they always tell me that they need to "check my credit" to decide whether I get to pay the cost of the phone off in 24 monthly installments or not. Sounds like an application for credit to me!

Thanks for the response. I was going off of your description where that cell phone company promised the inquiry would be "light". Just did a quick search and it seems as though that cell provider has a history of reps promising to do a soft pull but actually doing a hard pull.

In that case, forget what I said earlier... definitely not worth the hard pull. I suppose folks with excellent credit could afford to be frivolous with hard pulls, but I generally won't do anything requiring a hard pull unless absolutely necessary or unless the compensation is $400 plus (credit card sign-ups).
The MSC says that it will be a "light" credit inquiry. They are shopping the Big Four cell phone companies, so even if it is a competitive shop, there are three companies which are not the customer of the MSC. IMHO, the MSC can't promise anything. They do claim that the initial inquiry will be expunged, but others have pointed out that that was difficult for a bank to do, let alone a cell phone company.

When I have occasionally done attempted credit card signup at airport kiosks, they give me a false name, a false SSN, etc. But no one has paid me $400 to do them. There are a lot of shops out there which sound the same until you probe a little.

I should have been more clear. I wasn't suggesting I've been paid $400 to do a credit card shop, just that I expect a sign-up bonus of at least $400 if applying for a new credit card.
The shops are done by the MSC for Maritz research. The fee is now $35 and nobody touches them in my area. At the website it says that they pay a high fee because there are many steps involved. There are no light and lighter inquiries. It does not matter if it is for telecom, or car companies. Only soft that stay on record for 1 year and the hard that stay for 7 years. This is a twenty feet pole stay away from me shop.
I wonder how it works. The store will check my credit history and let's say approve me, what's next? I will have to say them "no thanks, I've changed my mind"?
I would do this shop if I could buy new cell phone and get reimbursed for it.
There are "soft" inquiries which only show when a consumer pulls their own credit report. It does not show when a lender pulls your credit report and therefore does not affect any scoring models. Soft inquires are generated when a lender does a prescreen or account review process.
Hard inquiries are generated when a consumer gives consent for a credit pull. That would include getting qualified for service in most cases. These stay on the report for 2 years and are visible to other lenders when they pull the credit report.
Plusha - there is nothing in the shop description to even remotely suggest that they are going to reimburse you for a new phone. Your credit score is going to get hit as Marta described. You will get $35 (at least in my area but the rate has been going up since there have been very few takers).

And this is unfortunate.
Myst, she was being a dreamer. Nothing wrong with that!

I, too, would do a LOT more cell phone shops if they let me buy something and reimbursed me for it!

I guess my training and career as a scientist has haunted me again. I am too much a literalist at times. smiling smiley

My engineer's mentality makes things difficult sometimes as well. I'm forever analyzing things and figuring out ways to make them better, more streamlined, more efficient, etc.

I think I've a bit of a scientist's mentality too. Last year, I tested various laundry detergents trying to find the best one for the money as far as average price, size, amount used, how often they go on sale, regular availability of coupons, and how well they worked. Took me three months to thoroughly go through the 15 detergents on my list and compile all of the data.

Arm & Hammer 16 ct power packs came out on top, by the way. So now that's what I shoot for, to stock up on.

Someone came through my town and cleaned about eight off the board yesterday.

My guess is they are about to claim bankruptcy, or even Rent-A-Center has collected on them and they have no credit score to worry about.
I was contacted directly about doing an easy $35 cell phone shop with due date the next day. Thinking it was bonused, I accepted. Then I was asked to do one more for each of the other two carriers at the same rate but not quite as close to home. I worked in a couple more shops in between to make a route of it, then the MSC sent me details showing I'd have to have my credit checked twice (the first could take 3 days so be patient) and so forth. So much for my route! And don't even get me started on the credit check. I've been stressing about this for days hoping the client doesn't approve me. After 4 days I finally just wrote and requested to be dropped. My schedule is booked up anyway. If it ever came through I don't know when I could get to it, and I just can't afford to chance 3 to 6 dings on my credit for nothing. I hope I don't get blacklisted but I can't be expected to wait on hold forever. It's a chance I had to take.

That's Mys Butterfly, if you please.
I'm going through that right now myself. I applied for three with a due date of today because I had an appointment within a mile of two of them, and could easily drive past the third on my way to the appointment. (I live 100 miles from them; I can't do them spontaneously, and I have to work around a part time job whose schedule I have no control over.)

then I find out about the "please be patient" nonsense.

I sent them an email saying if they didn't approve it in time for me to do it today, I wouldn't know until Saturday what days off I have next week. No reply to the email. Too late now for me to do them today.

I guess I'll have to see what happens after they do the credit pull.

I don't know why they don't just let us send them a screen shot from Credit Karma or a picture of our American Express statement that shows our FICO score. They could have had that within ten minutes, never mind waiting "several days."

Time to build a bigger bridge.
