downloading a program to convert Jpg to Pdf... malware!!??

So, I am trying to do a shop and I have to convert my receipt image from a jpg to a pdf. I click on the link provided and try the download....nothing happens. save my shop, close all windows, open only the one needed and try again...nothing. Frustrated, I emailed the scheduler and let them know I will be delayed because the thing won't download.

Then things start to happen! A window pops up and I can finally download it! Yay, right? No. Then I get another screen, Speedy PC pro. I have come across this before and it trashed my old computer! Now I am worried that I have malware or a virus or something on my computer!

I have no idea what to do. It is 1:30 am, surely the scheduler is long gone to bed. Tomorrow is Sunday, and I will be gone most of the day for a funeral.

Anyone else ever have anything like this happen?

First, are you sure you really have to convert a .jpg to a .pdf? I've not had to do that before, but I have had to resize most of my pics.

As to the Speedy Pro thingy... check this out: [malwaretips.com]

LJ,

This is what it says:

Receipt Upload: Please upload your receipt in PDF format here. If you have any questions on how to convert a file to PDF format, please click on the link below for assistance with this process. [www.hsbrands.com]

The site I am working with is Service Sleuths

Thanks for the link. I'm making hubby deal with it in the morning.
I was going to bet that it was Service Sleuth. Here's a really silly question. If you're using a scanner, is there any chance that it has a built-in option to save in PDF format? (I didn't realize that mine did, at first.)
There's an app called camera scanner that lets you take pictures as pdfs. I learned about it on here because I had the same issue with Service Sleuth. :-)

Thanks to all the forum members!
I normally take a pic with my cell, but will check out our scanner.

I'm also getting that app!
I have been using the paid version of SnagIt for years. It can convert among many different formats, including changing .gif to .JPG or .PDF, or basically any image type format to .PDF

It began life as a screen capture program and truly excells at doing that. It also has imaging editing tools. There may be a free version, and I am pretty sure that there is a free trial version.

I have had several shops recently which require converting images to PDF, even a few JPG images from my camera. Why some MSCs are insisting on that format it beyond me. They claim to only be able to read PDF, which is odd.

This is the program I use: [download.cnet.com]

Primo PDF - free and easy to use. It was actually suggested to me by a SS scheduler and it worked great. No worries about malware or anything else. Check it out!
Thanks, MtlShopper

I just got an email stating my shop was received and incomplete and I have till 4:00 to do so. UM, DUH! I gotta take care of this malware issue, first! I r komputer dum, waiting on my husband to take care of it.

How can they review a shop that I only saved, but have not actually submitted?

Off to email them again.

If you still have time, you may be able to complete it at a library. At my library, you can scan documents to a flash drive on the copy machine for free. They scan in PDF form. Even if your library doesn't have scanners, the librarian may have another suggestion. I think I may have converted jpgs to pdfs using Google Drive but it might have only been the other way around.
Well, I FINALLY got the blasted thing done! Getting that PDF was a PITA, but it is done and hopefully it will go better next time.

I'm still annoyed about the malware issue.
Now a new question...How do I discuss this with the scheduler? This is a pretty big issue and they need to be made aware (if not already) that the link they provided bundles this program that is known to cause issues.
It was a simple fix for me but it took a while to figure out. From my scanner I can convert files to different formats.
Yes, they should know that this link is causing more problems than it is helping. I would write an e-mail explaining the trouble it caused for you and let them know that it is bound to happen to other shoppers if they use that link.

About the PDFs, I just use cute PDF and print anything I want with it. It just becomes a print option when you hit ctrl +p.

Cute PDF is the way I save reports digitally in cases where Sassie shops do not offer a save as PDF option. Of course, it works for the other platforms. Saves on a lot of paper (I generally paper print the first page of each report so that I have a place to staple business cards, receipts, etc.). Cute PDF works flawlessly, is free, and doesn't require that you look at ads when you use it. Highly recommended.

I was having a problem with some reports for Service Sleuth because they said they were not .pdf. They sent me a link. But according to my scanner, they were. I tried resizing and every download had been accepted. I did not even use their link.
I do a lot of shops for Service Sleuths and HS Brands.

I had a friend show me the free app for Genius Scan.

I shoot a photo of the receipt with my iPhone, and it saves as PDF by default. I then email it to myself.
I can crop it to size on my iPhone too (so you can shoot the photo on any surface, including your lap in the car).

I haven't used my scanner to scan a receipt to pdf format since I downloaded the app.
My scanner will save to .PDF I also have the full version of Adobe Acrobat installed that will do it with a right click.

Before I installed that, I used Foxit Reader to convert from .JPG to .PDF by just right clicking on the file:

That store type reduces .jpg's down to a size too small to be legible and that is why Service Sleuth wants you to submit in .pdf as it wont resize it down then.
My scanner has options to save in different formats. Today though, the SS uploader was hinky. Back and forth, using both Firefox and IE, til it worked. It took numerous attempts and a couple of hours.

Yeah, mine does that too, but it involves time and thought. I like Genuis Scan because I am basically just taking a photo with the iPhone. It's as fast as a taking a selfie.

Cute pdf and primo pdf are the 2 that I use the most watch where you download them from CNET, they will want you to download a download manager which you do not want to do

cute pdf found here and free

primo pdf here

[filehippo.com]

Foxit used to be good but they bundle some crapware with it called Open Candy now! If you use the enterprise version you are OK
Remember too if you file size is too big and it is black and white you can make the .pdf printer a black and white printer to make the file size smaller.

I do IT for a living so while I am still new at mystery shopping ( about 100 shops) I am an expert when it comes to PCs and issues.
komondor is correct in the fact that Foxit Reader has gotten bloated over the last several years. I kept taking the updates and have not seen the installer since they added the crapware to it. Good call to recommend CutePDF.

When the official full version of Adobe Acrobat is smaller than the reader software, thats a bad sign.

For just reading and printing .pdf files, I use PDF Viewer plugin.

Open source and coded in javascript:
[github.com]
I also got the same malware when I downloaded PrimoPDF as was instructed in my Intellishop instructions as they said PDFs "blew up better without distortion". After I went through the whole download, getting the malware and all I tried to upload the PDF and the shop report wouldn't take it so I went with a jpg and it was fine. It has taken me two days to get the stupid program back off my computer. UGH! I would seriously recommend not downloading any program that shows up in shop instructions and find another way to get your files into PDF if it is truly needed.
If anyone thinks they may have malware a really great application is called hitman pro

you can run it without even installing and they trial lasts 30 days, it is very fast and works very well.
