It happens. When I first moved here, I picked up a puny-fee shop in a town that I thought was on MY side of town... I live on the outskirts of a large town/small city. Well, nope, it was clear across town on the opposite end, in those outskirts. Figured it out when I was pulling up directions to it, about to head out to perform the shop.
I searched a few of the "staples" MSC boards looking for other shops nearby, but alas, nothing. Kicked myself for it, but went out to do the shop anyway. When I was leaving the location, I noticed a thrift store/flea market place next door, and stopped in. They had BEAUTIFUL handmade quilts. I was able to nab 4 of them with my puny little $12 shop fee. Yep, $3 apiece!! They were really well-made and cool, in that no matter which way you folded them, the piecework displayed a scene. I mailed them to a friend who'd just moved to Vermont, and you know what? Two years later, I still get texts and phone calls from her, saying how people are complimenting her on them. I was so excited about finding them that my routing scheduling screw-up became forgotten.
I've picked up that same shop and others nearby plenty of times since, just to have an excuse to go back to that thrift store, but haven't found any more of those quilts since.
Anyway, I've often picked up loner orphan shops in out-of-the-way locations as a favor to schedulers, and always try to find something nearby to make it worth my while, even if it's not shop related. There's a gas station I do here that's not near anything shop-related, but it's across the street from a farmer's market that has super-cheap and awesome homemade pickles and jams.
