Subway - expected to front the $10 for employee reward

There are a lot of these shops in Canada. Does that make sense, that the mystery shopper, who is only getting paid $7 plus up to $6.75 reimbursement should have to front the $10 reward? I've done other reveal shops where you get the name and they are told they will receive something later. What happens if they don't like your report? Do they keep your $10?

Nope - not gonna happen. When I award the "golden ticket" it does not come out of my pocket and never will.
Stay very far away from those unless you are hungry one day and feeling generous. They are not the shops you can make a route out of and are not particularly lucrative. I agree with Canadamommy that it is not worth the headache later when you are doing your accounting.

Thanks, I see a bunch of these around. They look quick and easy. I was ready to pull the trigger on a few nearby, but now I'm reconsidering. Is the report difficult? How hard is it for the store/employee to pass?
Report is simple. Easy for them to pass.... but some you are required to print the certificate IN COLOR on your own dime.
Some do send the paperwork to you but it is rare and then there is paperwork to return the certificate if they fail. AND you wait and wait and wait up to 90 days for your measly pay AND the $10 you just gave away.
Only ones in rural areas like Haliburton.. I've seen max $16.75 plus reimbursement and "distance pay"

Great answers to a question I had also pondered

I do these, A LOT! There is some misleading information in the responses so far.

1. You do not have to print the certificates in color. The certificates stay with the store manager, who usually doesn't give a crap about the piece of paper. I have never known the MSC to send paperwork. There is nothing to return to the company - just a scan of the manager's signature to show that you showed up and paid out the reward.

2. Yes, they don't pay much. However, there is a Subway store on nearly every corner. Just in my little neck of the woods, within a 12 block radius, there are 4 stores. It is very easy to build a route. Also, the project is coming to an end and the bonuses are starting. This company is not known to be overly generous but a bonus is a bonus.

3. The assignment is incredibly easy. Stand in line, order the right sub, wait to see if they upsell you, go back to you car (which is parked right in front of the store), fill out the paperwork, go back inside, give out the reward or not, fill out the observations and you're done. Takes no more than 15 minutes, even when there's a long line.

4. This company pays every week without fail for these assignments. You are only out the reward money for a few days then it's put in your Paypal account. The assignment fees are paid in US$ while the reimbursement is paid in CDN $. Let your Paypal account get over $150 before you withdraw money so you can avoid the $0.50 charge.

5. Just to give you an idea of the pass/fail ratio: I've done 32 of these assignments this cycle. I've had 2 fails and the rest were passes. I've given away $300 out of my pocket and it has all been reimbursed.

6. The company will pay for distance but they're a bit cheap. They seem to think that gas is the same price in Canada as it is in the US.

This project has been ongoing for many years with slight changes and I'm always happy to see it come around. I hope this information helps.
I do these all the time. There are probably 10 Subways in my city and I take them whenever they come up.

You don't need to sample the food. My kids LOVE Subway so free lunches for them. I have done three back to back before and have fed everyone at once.

You are in and out of the location in under 10 minutes. The report takes 5 minutes and is super simple.

Payment is super fast - I have been paid within hours of completing a shop. These pay out at least twice per week so you are never waiting more than 3 days or so to be paid.

Get a receipt and get the form signed. Those are the two musts. If you think you might miss one of these things then pass on the assignment. I have never had one rejected.

MTLShopper - Paypal has recently changed their policy - you can now withdraw any amount for free, provided you have at least $15 in your account. No more waiting for the balance to hit $150. :-)

Your company is different from the one I see.

1. certificate in COLOR
2. you DO send back fails if they fail
3. easy yes
4. pay is S L O W

different company different rules but still super simple

The MSC I am thinking of is also very slow to assign.. Not good if you want lunch today, tomorrow or the next five days...

The one that I do is self-assign. Dixie, I didn't realize that there was another company in Ontario offering something similar.

Thanks for the 2nd wave of informative posts...guess I oughta just try doing one! Didn't realize there were two companies doing it, but I think I'm signed up with the "fast paying" one.

What's the rotation on these? I'd imagine they'd start to remember who the shopper is after a few times.
The rotation seems to be that you can do the same store more than once, but can't do the same store twice in a row. There has to be another shopper between your shops.

There is a store near my home that I shopped last year. I eat there regularly even when it's not a shop and one of the employees remembers me. Every time I walk in, he screams "it's the mystery shopper!" and runs to the cash to offer me a trio. In a joking manner, he'll push away whoever's on cash so he can get a chance at the reward. This year, I did his store and could only imagine his disappointment when he found out that I shopped while he was on vacation. For once, he would have been right!

Another store I did with barely 2 weeks in between visits. Same employees. None of them remembered me. They actually failed on the second visit.

Try one. You might surprise yourself and like it smiling smiley
The one that I did a while back was self-assign. It was pretty easy but it was a revealed shop. I used to do that when CAN$ was higher than US$ and my reimbursement was lower than my cost. The instant they changed the shop and I was made to foot the prize for the successful staff, I stopped doing any shop for them. And I told them so. They told me they would reimburse me in a week. But I did not like the concept. So, I eventually lost my elite status.

There were two main reasons I no longer wanted to do them. The very first one was I did not want to be partly financing the project for the FF. I remembered the problem they had when not every winner received their prize and the staff was not
motivated. I had an earful from many associate. And if you are doing a route, it could affect your better paying shops which require significant cash outlays.

The second reason was the staff moves from one FF to another and once you reveal yourself to one, there is a chance one staff would recognize you. Though I very seldom do FF, that happened to me once and I had already stopped doing that reveal shop. I have no regrets. You really have to like the food to continue doing it or something else. JMHO.
They do sound easy but I have a problem with financing part of the shop even if it is reimbursed. I would gladly give out a certificate - even in color - but I am not using my own money.

Apparently there is a different MSC for them in MTL for MTLShopper. I think MTLShopper and CanadaMommy were talking about two similar shops for different MSCs and same client.

What a shame it works that way in Canada. The same shop is so much fun here in the US.

I just started doing them and I just love to watch the faces of the employees when they receive the award. They don't even get the money right away. I give them the certificate and they have to wait for the money to come from the corporate office, but if ONE employee does it right - suggests the upsell - every employee in the store gets the award - and it's $20 each!

I make a little money and get a free lunch if I can keep my cost down, but I really do it for the fun of watching them win. This has become my favorite thing lately.

I print the certificate in color - I assume I'm supposed to, although I don't think I read that anywhere.

I haven't had anyone *not* attempt the upsell yet. I will be so disappointed on that day!

I hope it's just a matter of time before they change the way it's done in Canada. It's better for them to wait than for you to have to wait for it. THEY don't mind!! They're not missing it because they never had it to begin with.

Good for the employees at Subway, not so good on my wallet. Besides if I wanted to "invest", I'd go to a bank tongue sticking out smiley This shop would be good for someone who has a lot of spare cash lying around (e.g. high income level)

You know, it's like some clients think we're made of money or have nothing to lose.

This is nuts. Give us something to print out instead of handing over cash. geez!
I agree! I don't think I'd be having as much fun if it were coming out of my pocket.

Yeah exactly.. Maybe allow us to print out vouchers or something that then the employee can cash through their company. We're already spending money buying food tongue sticking out smiley I know it gets reimbursed later but still. Only time I'll shell out money on a shop is if its something I need e.g. kitchen store

I always deduct what came in from PayPal and I've never had a charge. What is different with your accounts?
Another benefit of the certificate is the employee gets to have two great days. The day they get the certificate and are recognized, and the day they get their extra money.

I used to love doing the framing reveal shops. If I remember correctly, I was mailed a $75 certificate to give the employee - along with the cheesy $5 print I had to take them to frame. It was fun.

There are two types of people in this world: Those who can extrapolate from incomplete data.
You guys are making this shop (and its payment) seem way more complicated than it really is. No, I'm not a "high earner", and I certainly don't have tons of money just laying around lol. I'm a full-time mystery shopper/auditor. This is how I make my living. If I do 10 of these shops in 1 week, I'm out $100 for no more than 6 days. I can live with that. I don't expect interest. The bank sure doesn't pay any for that amount of time/funds. Considering some companies expect us to spend way more than $14.05 (cost of the sandwich+ reward) then wait 90 days (or more) for our pay, I find this to be a pretty good deal.

To me, MS is is more job than investment but it you want to look at it that way, how's this? For 10 shops, I'll have "invested" $140.50 and 6 days later (max - it's actually every couple of days) I'll receive a "return" of $210.50 - actually a bit more now because the CDN$ is low and part of those monies are paid in US$. Plus, I get 10 sandwiches that I share with friends, homeless and my family. Pretty good investment, IMO.

It's a fun shop - really! The ones that succeed are always pleased, those who don't, know they messed up. They're not mad or anything. The hardest part of the shop is getting the manager to sign your sheet and get the names of everyone.

A few years ago, we had vouchers to print. So many employees either lost them or never got the prize that the company decided to award the prizes directly to them, in cash. They love the immediate gratification of getting cash in hand for doing their jobs.

Thanks for the Paypal tip! I was unaware they'd changed their policy and were no longer charging Canadians fees for transferring amounts less than $150. Great news!
BTW, unless the forms aren't signed or the simple observations not done properly, these shops don't get rejected. If they need clarification, they contact the shopper and give them a chance to respond.
