Chase O/D shops... When they ask for ID

I swear I remember this being discussed before... but can't find anything with 'Search'. I must not be entering the right terms.

On these simple shops, the ones where you just briefly speak with a banker, and there's almost no report, you're mainly just collecting brochures & a card, and writing the numbers on them before taking photos/scanning and uploading them? I mean, there's a few other questions, but pretty easy report.

Anyway, I've only done one of these before. The banker dude asked for my ID, and I didn't know what to say, so I gave it to him. Now that I'm trying to schedule more of these, including one that's a return to that first location...

Are we required to provide ID if asked? Or can we decline? The Guidelines I got don't address this. I emailed the scheduler but haven't heard back yet.

Thanks!

Not required. They actually prefer you remain anonymous on these. If they ask me for this, I just tell them that I was just looking for information. I use a fake name, so my ID would never match anyway.
I decline. I tell them I don't have my license on me, it's in my car, and that I am only carrying my military ID. I am leery of providing such sensitive information until I'm comfortable in their security/confidentiality. (My military ID has my SSN on it.)

Yep. I tell them I'm not in the practice of handing out my SSN to someone who hasn't yet gotten my business.

Sometimes I'll just tell them "It's in the car, and I'll go out and get it if I open an account... but for now, please keep telling me about XYZ feature of this particular account I'm interested in?"

I do not give my ID or SS#when asked and I've done a lot of these shops. I believe the banker wants to run your ID to see your history with the bank. I simply tell him I don't have an account with the bank and that normally ends the request for ID. If he/she persists I tell him I prefer not to give it out and it is not needed as I am merely gathering info. I will gladly reveal my first and last name if asked but then that is an alias. I did have one banker who really persisted about getting my SS# but I was just as persistent in telling him to take a flying leap, in a nice way of course. I ended up getting the info & documents I needed and he ended up not getting my ID or SS#.

I think most bankers are aware they get shopped a lot and some like to play games to get the suspected shopper flustered.
I have done a ton of these and have never been asked for my ID. I did at another shop and simply told them I left my purse at home. There is no reason they should be asking for it.
I decline and tell them I just want general information. They have always backed off and said okay. I have done over 200 of these, about 1/3 will ask for my ID, as soon as I sit down with them.

I've never been asked for my ID but they have turned to their keyboard and asked my name and I just say, "I don't have an account here."

Sometimes I'm thinking of changing banks, sometimes I'm helping a senior friend manage their checking account and "They told me they had some kind of overdraft protection but they couldn't really explain to me how it works, so I thought I'd come here and ask."

Never give your ID. Now that you have, don't ever use your real name again, in case they put you in some kind of "secret shopper ID" list.

I can't give my real name because I have accounts at this bank.

Time to build a bigger bridge.
I remember reading that thread about being asked for ID and I remember how fortunate it is to have a forum like this to discuss situations like this. I had done the shops before and no one had asked for ID. From that point on I have always locked my purse in the car out of sight so that if a banker asked me for ID I could say I didn't bring my purse in. I'm all prepared but, still, no one has asked me for ID!

whoa. I've done about 30 of these and no one has every asked for me id. I generally use an alias when I do bank shops.
I have done about 100 of these shops for two different MSCs and have never been asked for my ID.

I think the ID question must be a regional thing. Or maybe they aren't allowed to ask in my state.

I have had a few who have asked if I have an account, I say no, I'm just looking for information and am considering changing banks or something like that.

I always use a fake name unless the scenario prohibits it.

Personally, I hate the O/D scenario and will try to avoid taking that one if at all possible.

On any project that may result in a request for an ID, I just say I left my purse at home. That way I can say I will have to come back on another day, but could they give me the paperwork anyway so i can look it over that night. It's never a problem.
I usually go in with my purse, but I would never give up my ID. I just tell them, "I don't want to get into any databases. I just need information now."

Time to build a bigger bridge.
I usually give a fake name, and decline to leave a phone number. I have never been asked for ID. I also always tell them I do not have an account with them. So far I have not had an issue. Since you gave your ID on the first one, your name might be in the system now, so I would recommend using another one. I would also be leary of re-shopping the same location if it was in the last few months. You could get the same banker, and they may recognize you.
I've never been asked for ID when seeking information. The only time they need ID is when you're opening an account. Even without ID, I never give my real name.
