Scanman, I totally get what you said but it may be because I grew up in New York City where siphoning gas with a hose of some sort and sucking was a regular practice (to be avoided if you wanted to live a long and healthy life). Often these techniques were not used by the owner of the car but some hoodlum trying to gas up his (or her to be politically correct in 2014) car but yes, it was used by owners when you were running out of gas and had access to another car with gas so you could go on your way.
Reasons for you to think about to buy only one gallon of gas which might make you feel better about it: 1.that is all the money you have with you 2.This station is more expensive than your regular place but you are running out and just need enough to get you to the place you usually go to. Personally I have done the latter a few times, not on a shop.
