Tax ID (EIN)

I went on the IRS site today to get an EIN number for my mystery shopping as some companies require that you have one. The IRS wanted $120 for this service. I can't believe it. The IRS charges $120 for an EIN number. Isn't something wrong here??????

I was on the IRS site and I thought it a little strange. It would not let me continue unless I put my credit card number in.
Maybe I went in the wrong door.

Thanks for your reply stating you paid nothing in December.
Make sure you are on irs.gov. I went to get one and did a google search. Another site came up, trying to charge me. They are free on the actual government site.
It really does sound like you were on the wrong site. An EIN should not cost you anything. There are sites that look a lot like the IRS site but they're just trying to sell you services.

Here's a link to the official site. I just got mine last week, it was / is free. At the very bottom of the page it says "Apply Online Now". That is a link to the form.

My goodness. Make sure you are on the correct website as others have advised. www.irs.gov It does not cost you anything and I hope you didn't "pay."
The IRS will give you an EIN for free. Absolutely free. It is done online, and you get the number instantly. Then paperwork follows in the mail. Nothing more to fill out, just paperwork showing that you have an EIN.

You managed to find a scam site. Just go directly to the IRS web site. Search only on the IRS web site. This will explain exactly how to do it online or by mail: [www.irs.gov]

The bottom line is that it is FREE.
