Be extremely careful accepting a Jiffy Lube Shop...

5 out of 9 Jiffy Lube stores reporters visited, scammed the reporters (hidden cameras placed in cars to catch the crooks)

This is why I never, ever, never do oil change shops. Please watch the video:

Not all oil change shops are the same. I am very cautious about JL. But, there are also oil change shops at dealerships and at independent members of a national association of oil change shops. I happily go to a small (4 store local chain) that is part of the national association which gets shopped.

Jiffy Lube ruined my car. I will never, ever, ever do another oil change shop.

Motivation increases when we assume large responsibilities with a short deadline.
Unless you change your own oil, you are paying some company to change your oil. Maybe they are mystery shopped. Service Sleuth shops independent and small chain oil change only facilities which belong to a national association (the association is the client, so I can't mention them).

You can't paint all Jiffy Lube shops with the same brush. They are not all bad. 75% are pushing the limits and showing people that sit in the waiting room a wrong air filter that is completely clogged and charging customers for full synthetic oil and pumping the standard crude from the 55 gallon barrel into the car. So what if the filter is hard to get to and might not get changed. You might go to another shop the second time around and it won't kill the engine right away.

Before I was a mystery shopper, I knew a Jiffy Lube guy from high school. He was the one who only made it though one year of HS before dropping out. Yeah, he lived in a trailer park, but it was a double wide!

If your male and intimidating, you have a chance. You have to stand outside the yellow plastic chain and watch them like a hawk and get low to the ground so you can observe the pit guy who can do the most damage. Then you need to talk to them and not talk down to them. You can manage an oil change without them stripping out the pan bolt, or over/under filling it.

In other words, if your a woman and are sitting in the waiting room drinking the coffee that probably has finger oil prints on the filter that was used to make it, you don't stand a chance. They will likely do something negative under the hood.

I go with my own oil and filter, "Customer supplied oil & filter." They have a discount button for that on top of the coupon and it was worth it to me to not do it myself. They can do it right if they know your watching them like a hawk.

Now that I MS, I have better choices. They will not think twice about grabbing the channel locks and slapping them on your oil bolt. Forget about the computer reset to make the light not come on for not getting the change, unless it's lit and you verbally smack them around and not want to pay.

I took my car to Toyota they stripped the drain plug on my car when I had the oil changed This same dealership I know someone who had their oil changed he marked his filter before he had it serviced and after it was serviced he checked and the same filter was still in the car all the service manager said we will give you a free oil change he said he will never go back to that dealership.
There is a locally owned regional Jiffy LLube franchise in my area that passes the state AG's fraud screenings with very high marks. I have no qualms about using any one of their 11 locations and shop them regularly. If your state or locality does not have active anit-fraud teams testing automotive service and repair facilities, and publically reporting the results, maybe it's time to ask local and state lawmakers, "Why not?" Taxpayers get what they are willing to pay for, if they are vigilant!

For several years there were three household vehicles at our house and I was in a MSC rotation to get all three done every three months; never had a problem. All one has to do is to say "NO" to extra services; regardless of Jiffy Lube, Midas, the dealership where you bought the vehicle or others.
I've done several ( I THINK it was Jiffy Lube) here in So Cal. They have cameras aimed under the hood so that you can see everything they're doing under there. I think it was in response to the above scandal. So I feel fine bringing it there.

Kathierost - WOW! I have noticed that a lot of things start on the West Coast, and then jump to the Middle Atlantic after a year or two. Even things like whether babies should sleep on their backs or fronts (and the answer keeps changing). So maybe under-the-hood cameras will make it to PA/NJ/DE in a few years. JF is a franchise, so it might just be the individual franchise owner. Also, California has some of the strictest consumer protection rules in the country (like gift cards can not expire started in California and is still more universal there than anywhere else), so that might be why cameras are in use in California. The consumer reporters on the New York City TV stations never lack for a story. Go to the garage with a disconnected air conditioner wire and it will cost you $600. Go to the garage with a loose valve stem and you are going to need a new tire. Yes, I have seen those, and I don't get to watch NYC TV very often, but on slow news days the stations in Philadelphia repeat them. An endless saga. [This is not picking on JF, it is endemic in North Jersey, Long Island, NYC, lower NY State, Western Connecticut and happens at every brand of station, independent operators, etc. Finding the honest ones is a challenge. And it isn't just cars. Try getting your home AC fixed when it is 95F and 85% humiduity and you will find that nothing is a simple repair. Actually, it is a simple repair, but it is going to cost you $1000 anyway.]

I personally will never (again) go to any "quick lube" places, this includes Jiffy Lube. Years ago, I had an oil change at Perfect Auto (oil change place) and I mentioned my air was not running right.

The guy came back and said you need your air conditioner worked on and it will be $600-800. (I don't remember the exact quote but it was over $600) I told him to put my car back together and I left...

I asked a coworker if she knew anyone that knew about cars? She said her husband had a shop and was honest. He looked at my car, did something quick under the hood and say, "Okay. You are good to go." I said, "What? What was wrong?" He said, "Your belt was loose and I tightened it. Your air conditioning should run just fine now."

I was so grateful!! I tried to pay him but he refused any money. I put $20 on his little cart and told him to enjoy a great lunch! I was thankful that I trusted my gut instinct that day and found an honest person to tell me what was wrong with my car smiling smiley
Since Jiffy Lube doesn't do air conditioners, it's sort of a moot point there.

As a woman, I know that every time I take my vehicle ANYWHERE for service, I am going to get screwed. I take the secret shops for vehicle service at all of my local shops (Jiffy Lube, Firestone, dealerships) as I would rather be able to report on my experience than just go in and get treated like an idiot every time.
