Locations in Airports---What are the reasons they typically pay more?

One pattern I've noticed is that locations in airports often pay about 25% more than other local locations in the same chain. This could be to accommodate parking costs, but parking can be expensive in other parts of the area, as well, and not all shoppers actually park vehicles while performing a shop.

It could also be because some of these locations are behind security checkpoints to which shoppers need access, though this is not true of all of them.

It may also be because some people have anxiety about airports and are reluctant to shop there, but I doubt that's a really huge reason, as we route shoppers aren't easily deterred.

Any other ideas of which I haven't thought...? Would be particularly interested in hearing from those who have many years of mystery shopping experience and/or have shopped in airports.

I think it's for the post security area as you mentioned and the pool of shoppers flying through a given airport on any given day is pretty small.
Also most airports are not near residential areas and there are not other shops in the vicinity.

Additionally, add the cost of parking at the airports also.

If the MSC won't pick up my parking in addition to the fee, I don't take the shop.

I always get reimbursed for parking, tolls and of course, purchases. All of my airport routes are well into double digits in the same concourse so there is no need for me to take other shops on the same day.
I think the OP was referring to individual airport shops on job boards as opposed to the routes.

Ok, bgriffin. I don't get out of bed, never mind battle airport traffic, for one shop!
Thanks, you guys. This particular airport does have residential zones and multiple other chain retailers near it, though, and it is in a city with really good public transportation and shuttle service, so it is not a given or near-given that you will even have to park. Not all of the shops at this airport which start with higher fees than other locations in this area are located behind security checkpoints, either. Maybe some of these companies automatically bonus airport shops whether they are behind a security checkpoint or not. Either way, I'm not complaining. I just find it interesting. tongue sticking out smiley

If that MSC offered to buy me security creds, I'd take the bus and ride on over. There's a bus line right out the door and down the street and runs right to Hobby airport. I'll probably be waiting a while for the offer email, though.
IF you can afford it, and see a highly bonused shop, you can purchase a fully refundable ticket, get through security, and then say you had an emergency and leave the airport and get your money back. A real PITA, but sometimes those airport commissions get really high. Also, my parking has always been reimbursed.

Ocean girl, I forgot to mention to also bring a small carry on bag to help your cred.

Good idea there. I see an airport wings shop with a $20 bonus.
May have to rig that scheme up when the budget allows.

Or stack shops from other MSC's. There are MSC's that do reimburse for parking! Better yet, there are airport parking shops out there too.

I used to do a lot of airport shops but stopped the airport in denver with parking is about 1 hr of driving/shuttle each way add in the time for the shops and I was getting paid very little even with the 30.00m bar shops I actually did 3 in a row but it was about 4 hours of my time plus 2 for driving. Then about 2 hours for the detailed reports so I had a 8 hr day and made 90.00.
