Online Auto Insurance quotes

I keep getting these messages for several days now asking for shopper to do online auto insurance quotes. Shop pay is $20, which sounds pretty good on the surface. However very few details are give. Such as "days of week" and "hours" which only say "see guidelines". Which of course, you can't see unless you sign up. I also notice that 14 of the 15 shops available in my area have not been picked up, and that makes me a bit nervous.

I'd love to make $20 for an online shop, but it seems like the 3 capital letters shopping company may be hiding something. This is a bigger fee than they usually offer. Anyone have any feedback?

I did one of these. I had to go online and talk to someone online about insurance. Once you were done, you filled out your report. I thought it was a pretty decent shop. It paid good like $20-25 so I took it! smiling smiley
Thanks SunnyDays2, were there restrictions on the time of day you could call? It's sometimes difficult for me to make or accept calls during normal business hours.

There are three types of shops, online, speaking to an agent and call center. They are easy. You can do them on your lunch hour or after 5 depending on what type of shop you apply for. Notify the schedulers. They can give you the facts better than anyone.
Be aware that insurance quotes usually require pulling your credit report to make sure you are a 'good risk'. Several pulls (I was told once 5) in a year can reduce your credit score. Since your credit will also be pulled for a quote for buying a car, entering into a contract for services such as a cell phone, pre-qualifying to purchase a home, etc. etc. you my want to restrict your 'pulls' to things of personal value rather than shops. A lower credit score generally results in higher interest rates or denial of credit. If/when I do this kind of thing as a shop I dance around actually giving my social security number by asking them to quote me based on my estimate of what my credit score is and IF I decide to go with their product I will allow them to verify the score I gave them is about right. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. If it doesn't and is a shop, I will walk away from it.

I do have a Discover credit card which posts my credit score on every statement, so I do know what it is and if/when I next go car shopping, I will take along my most recent Discover statement to show my recent score for a quote without pulling my credit.

I am pretty sure you had to call within the MSC's designated call times. It's been 2 years now since I did the online insurance shop, so I don't remember all the rules on this. Sorry!
I was able to do one of the web ones. It was easy. Because it was the web, I could do it at any time. I got lucky, because there are two insurance companies assigned to you, and one of those companies does not do business in my state. I had to do a couple of screen shots. I had to wait 48 hours to see if there is any follow up contact. I did the main part on Sunday and finished it yesterday. I think it was worth the $20.
I did the web shop with 2 companies. I did not think it was enough pay for the time but I am shopping insurance for two new teen drivers so would have done it anyway. You can only do one. So individual choice. about 2.25 hours total.
Thanks for the feedback everyone. I went ahead and took the web shop. Still a lot of shops available here, I hope that's not a bad sign.

How was the report for this shop?

I still have one step to finish (after waiting 48 hours) for my online shop, but the report wasn't bad so far. Mostly multiple choice, with a couple of short narratives (which were a bit repetitive IMO). There were a lot of questions in total; typical for this MSC.
Just my two cents but one of the schedulers is a smarty pants (at least it came across that way via email). I told him I'd pass but wished him luck as I see that he has PLENTY of shops left to fill *chuckles*

Why are there still so many of these? Do they do a credit check, is that why nobody is doing them? I haven't done any yet but there are still plenty in my area.
I've done similar type shops for a much higher fee so these aren't all that appealing. Mine were for other MSCs who didn't have such a fondness for making their ICs jump through hoops. Cut in pay + unnecessary added work = no thank you.

2.5 hours for $20.00? That is only $8.00 an hour. I'll pass.
In that case though, the poster was in the process of actually shopping for insurance. If it's something I absolutely have to do anyway then $8 an hour can often be better than $0. My first set of insurance shops eight years ago included visiting three agents. My pay probably was only about $10 or $11/hour when all was said and done. At that time I found who would end up being my next two insurance agents. The first switch alone saved me at least $15/month for the next few years.

I think so many are left in part because if you have car insurance through the largest car insurance company in the US, then you are not eligible. That eliminates me and about 20% of the other drivers in the US. When I have done these for other insurance companies in the past, my company has always had the lowest premiums, so I was very happy to spend the time finding that out.
