IKEA Shops

Ikea was one of the first jobs I did when starting my MSing "Carreer", it took hours and I remember saying,
this is S@#!%, and almost quit Msing altogether. I believe the fee then was 60.00...you are forewarned, beware!!!!

Irene, why? I took my time, enjoyed the shop, and got it done in two and a half hours. I had no issues whatsoever.

From my experience (unless they changed it) it was so involved, couldn't find help on the floor, the report
not clear, 2 1/2 hours in the store, another 2 hours for report..., no one raves about doing Ikea...just my opinion.

IKEA is my favorite store. But after all the chatter on this forum, I'm holding out for more money. The MSC is offering $55--that includes a $10 bonus. I won't take it until it's $90. They have been begging for someone to take this shop for 2 months, but haven't accepted my offer. I can wait longer than they can. smiling smiley
I was mentally prepared for what to expect. I knew that I had to visit x# departments and interact with employees. The day that I went, there were employees in all but 2 departments.

I knew that I had to do something thing in the aisles that were self serve, and interact with an employee there.

I knew that I had to make a purchase and a return.

I expected to spend at least five hours in the store. I spent less than 3. I don't remember how long the report took exactly, but that was nothing some wine didn't help!

My sole issue is how long the MSC takes to pay. That is my only deterrent from doing additional shops.

I have avoided any shop related to the same MSP as Ikea. I have done 2 shops for this particular MSP, and they were too slow to pay for my taste, so anything from them I just ignore.
Invoicing, long waits for payment and then having to beg and threaten at the end of the whole thing are just some of the reasons I wrote the MSC off.
Chris, if I listened to all the chatter on this forum, I would not be a shopper.

Do an advanced search for "Ikea" and read the one that has about 50+ replies.

This is the 100 ft pole list for many reasons.

Then actually read the MSC agreement and you will find they they are the slowest paying MSC out there!

Yes, the fact that payment is not only slow, but you have to chase it for weeks is what concerns me.
Remember that every store is a separate entity. A poorly managed store, with employees that are just putting in their day, are going to make for a very lengthy experience. A well managed store with staff that likes being there will make an entirely different day for the visit. I visit 3 different stores every week. One is my half time store, everything where it should be, signs in place, well stocked. My problem store takes twice the time as they have multiple problems with management and staff. Everything should be the same, right? Not even close.
It isn't always the fault of the MSC, the mystery shopper or merchandiser. The store is the wild card you are dealt. You may hit 21 or go bust.
.
cindy, that explains it. My store was well organized and had happy employees.

You do three IKEA shops a week? You're my hero!

That all makes a lot of sense. I'm going to go ahead and do the shop tomorrow. Bummer about the pay hassle though.
IKEA will be crowded on Sunday. That alone will make the shop a nightmare. If you can go during the week during the day, that will be less stressful.

Regardless, good luck!

*Clarification*

Good lord no! No! NO! This was about stores in general, whether it is an audit, a MS or merchandising, stores are all different. I am familiar with the closest Ikea, and there isn't enough money in the world to get me to MS that beast. It was a trial to just buy a gift for a friend. Never again will I darken their door!
Actually, I hated to admit it, but I enjoyed them as well. My average time is 2 1/2 hours and I usually have a nice lunch in the cafeteria. My problem is that I performed the same one over so that the staff recognized me too easily. I have not performed one since February.

Do not read so much, look about you and think of what you see there.

I've been able to get $55 out of them. It was enough.

I know, it's packed on Sundays. But I'm a stay-at-home mom with a one year old doing this to supplement our income since I left my job. I do shops either with him or weekends when my husband can watch the kids. Weeknights don't work because we have an 8 year old too- soccer, homework, baths etc etc. Having said all that, getting paid to spend hours away from the kids all by myself? Kind of awesome.
How did it go for you?

Well, I would love to be contrary and say, "It was great! Totally worth the money!" But...it was not great, and not really worth the money. It all went fine, it was just so incredibly time consuming. From start to finish it was four hours at the store, and then three to do the input. Having said that, there were definitely some complicating factors like it being Sunday, it being my first (only???) IKEA shop, my overall inexperience as a shopper, a janky computer, my tendency to be verbose in narrative...

So, I'm torn between saying I'll never do it again and my desire to try to best my own time. I'm going to hold off and see just how long it takes to get paid and how much of a hassle that is and then decide.

I really appreciated all the info on the forum though, it would truly have been a nightmare without that. Also right after that I went to AVEDA and they loaded me up with calming essential oils and gave me a head rub so that was awesome.

Really, don't feel bad, we are experienced shoppers (10 years), and wouldn't ever do Ikea again, not enough money for all those hours....once was more than enough. I actually thought I was being punked when I heard a shopper was so fond of this shop!!

I did the shop at the end of June. I have not been paid yet. I expect to be paid next month.

That's too long for my preference.

I did the Tampa IKEA shop! Total nightmare! 92, 000 people were in the store the day I shopped. IKEA grossed 6.6 million on that one day alone just in that one store. I managed to corral one associate of the six needed for the report. And, I was just in my first two weeks of MS. I cried after it was over. I must have walked 5 miles in that store that day. But, I hammered on. Still, don't know if my report was accepted or not. I just added the note that there were 92,000 shoppers along with me that day and that associates were frightened into hiding in the back stock rooms. And that was the God's honest truth. It's made every shop like a breeze to me ever since. Still, I'd like to try and tackle it again on a Monday or a Tuesday when things are a bit slower.
92000 people? Seriously? I would have left.

I did mine during the week, and the crowd was manageable. I took my time and was done in less that 3 hours.

Wow...92000 people.

Yep, 92,000 people all in one day. Even the cashiers were popping Xanax or something. They were all bug-eyed at all the shoppers lined up. It was like moving with a herd of cattle in IKEA that day. And the associates were hiding behind stock room doors peeping out the windows at the masses of people. When I asked they all told me to come back on a Monday or Tuesday when it was the slowest. I'd like to do it again, just not with 92,000 other people!!!
I did IKEA once... once. The MSC takes 3 months to pay - and even then you have to bug them for it and re-send your invoice several times! NEVER AGAIN.

I went on a weekday, so it wasn't crowded.

That HAS to be 99% of the battle. Ikea on the weekends is an extreme sport.
And that's just the parking lot!
