I have a Hotmail account that I have had since the early 90's and keep it for old time contacts. I have to say that Microsoft has done a great job with spam filtering as this email gets about 30 spams a day and only one a week makes it through.
After they changed it to Outlook.com, they started checking to see if the "User Agent" indicated that I was using Firefox and then failed to work and gave a non descriptive error when I tried to get mail. I added a plugin to Firefox that allowed me to spoof the browser type and I changed it to iPhone 3.0. Then like magic it worked again. This proves they were blocking Firefox. Also by selecting a device that does not support Java or Silverlight, it forces Microsoft to serve up old light version of Hotmail. Ad blocking works well as well with the light version.
This tool is called
Custom User Agent String and works with Firefox, Chrome, and Opera:

You can set it to report that you are using any browser or device to any site and save it to automatically change when you visit the offending site. I tell Google that I am using Chrome and then the Google Translate works in Firefox. Without the spoofing, then they block it from working.
There is a obscured option in (Hotmail) Outlook.com preferences to bring back the old simple "light" interface. You need to access your account with IE and then click on the preferences ring in the upper right corner of the screen.
Then click on "General" tab in the left menu headings and open it.
Now, click on "Light Version" and click the checkbox in the main screen and click "Save" in the upper left of the main screen.
