Medicare shops

Is it allowed to ask which MSPs have Medicare shops since Medicare is not the client? I am turning 65 in the very near future and am looking into Medicare Advantage plans. Please no lectures because I only want an answer if it is not a violation of our ICAs and forum rules.

My understanding is it would not violate any rules. The plans are administered by many different companies and shops are through several MSCs. Sorry I can't answer the main question because I haven't paid attention to any notifications lately.

Equal rights for others does not mean fewer rights for you. It's not pie.

I have seen Medicare shops done through Second to None, Service with Style and just today got an email for one through TrendSource. The question the way you framed it is perfect because there are two different types of Medicare shops, one done by a regulating agency and the other type done by the insurance companies that provide Medicare based/related products.

I'm sure there are more MSPs that are or will be offering 'Medicare' shops. Especially with the Medicare Advantage product line there are many localized variations in product and provider. So the Service with Style shops have historically been in only 3 states with product lines for one insurer. Since "Advantage" products need more explanation than normal supplements, these are frequently done as seminars.
Let me know if I need to start a new thread. I actually could use some insight from experienced Medicare shoppers. I have done several and have another coming up. My question is, on an informal/kiosk event what is the best way to "happen upon" an event located at a retirement center? I have done several in pharmacies and hotels and that is easy, but my last one, and my next one are scheduled at live-in retirement centers. I am not close to 65 so I looked really out of place at the last one.

Your guidelines may have some suggestions as to whether you are allowed to call the event company to ask if they have any presenters around etc. If they aren't giving suggestions, I would show up at the retirement center to 'pick up literature' on the retirement center's facility for a loved one and ask at their desk for it with the explanation that you are collecting for the family to peruse and later tours may be set up of centers that would seem appropriate. Chances are that the informal event will be happening in the lobby, which would make gathering information from them as well a natural extension of your visit. If you don't see them you could ask at the center's information desk if there is a Medicare event today because you had heard one was being held there and that likely would get you through to any meeting room. Going into the meeting room with a handful of center brochures would make it appear to have been a lucky happenstance that the information desk had sent you along to them.
I am now searching for a well paid seminar type, as I have a question for myself. I did my seminar 2 years ago, and changed to my current plan, found a great Dr. close to home with no co-pay. Now looking for a supplement. When doing the Kiosk, I'd say I need information for a family member, she'll take it from there, loads of info. I also found an assisted living home for my sister by doing one as a job. She is 10 years older than I and developed Dementia, and couldn't live alone. I'm the one that had to put her in....very rough!!
Knowing there is someplace out there for your loved ones is worth the research, and getting paid is a win win.

Aprice37: You could always say that you are visiting a friend who lives there, but the agent probably won't ask what you are doing there. Most of the time, if it is a kiosk shop, it will be a health fair type of thing and many people attend. You probably would not stand out. I usually stop at several tables before going to the one I am actually shopping. Good way to make some observations first to see if the agent is calling anyone over to their table. The insurance companies send out tons of letters to Medicare eligible folks and they usually include a schedule of upcoming seminars and events. If asked, just say you got a letter in the mail or saw the event in the paper.
I do about 40 or more seminars and kiosk shops each month from October thru the first week in December. This is my busiest time for shopping and my biggest money making months. Yay, Medicare Advantage.

I'm nowhere near retirement age and I do the home visits. A sales rep is supposed to come to my house and discuss all of the options available for my mother-in-law. I did these through Trend Source last year, and not one time did anyone show up.

Did you still get paid the full fee, or was it reduced because no one showed up?
I' doing one tomorrow...I did one and the Agent didn't show up, Trend Source pays half the fee.

Trend Source, or The Source as they are now called, drives me bonkers with their scheduling. They will post a shop and ask you to apply. They may or may not get back with you after days and days of waiting to hear if you got the assignment or not. By the time they do assign the shop, I usually am booked with other seminars or visits. The Source does pay well and I like doing the Medicare shops for them, but would really like for them to act in a timely manner regarding scheduling and notification.
What states are you in that you're seeing the Source shops? I'm finding nothing in my state at all.
I am in Florida. Just logged on to The Source and there are many, many shops in my area...Tampa
Bay.
@nslowry, you should also find a number of Medicare shops with Service with Style in your area of Florida.
Flash, I am scheduled for 27 shops this month with SWS. I've been doing the seminars for 4 years now with them. Good thing that the client does not care if the agents know you are a shopper or not. Keeps the agents on their toes.
Thanks for the heads up though. I think there are only a couple of states that SWS handles for the Medicare shops since the client does limited business in states other than Florida.
Love Open Enrollment months!
Yes, I earned my 1099 from SWS each year for a number of years with that client's seminars. Unfortunately they have stopped the seminars in my area.
The pay is low from SWS for the seminars compared to other MSCs, but I can go to one location for two seminars a day and at least complete one report between the two times. Often, I can work in some kiosk shops for other companies before or after the SWS ones.

I have to be careful not to schedule a visit when my broker is the agent.
My broker was the presenting agent at more than half the shops I did. She did an impeccable seminar and always made them feel 'fresh'. I too would write up one and/or go do some shops during the break between morning and afternoon sessions.
I was supposed to do one tomorrow, and got a call saying the location has been moved. the new location
and Agent I did a year ago. I was told this is o.k. I'm a bit nervous as maybe she"ll remember me. I was the only one with her at her Kiosk last year and we spoke for a long time...yes, it's been a year and I could say
I still haven't changed over, but still....who goes to so many of these?

The plans change every year so it is not at all unusual for seniors to visit the competition each year to see what is new and what might work best for them.
I was (again) the only one at the event (kiosk) The Agent remembered me, and I her...I pulled it off, but won't be evaluating her again. She said, you don't need to come back next year, just call in....sad smiley

I completed a Medicare Advantage shop for The Source on Monday at a Senior Expo scheduled for 10 AM. There was a problem trying to access the questionnaire beforehand, but I figured it was a glitch since all of the instructions and other bits of info came up fine. I have done so many of these that I just went with what was usually expected.
At 1 PM, I got an email from The Source saying that the client had cancelled the shop.,....THREE HOURS AFTER the start of the scheduled time. And then they asked me to send an email if I completed the assignment. The email also said it was removed from my shop log "without penalty". WTF??? Without penalty to whom? I had to get up early to go to the Expo, stand in line for 40 minutes to even get into the building, do the observations, and so on. Now what??? No pay probably.

They pay half the fee if job was cancelled or Agent didn't show.

My Medicare shop through Trendsource was cancelled, but it was cancelled 3 days out....so I doubt I'll see any fee for that one.

You have to show up, and I took a pic to prove I was there.

I had mine cancelled last year after taking all the tests and printing out huge info. I haven't taken another due to the bad taste that left. I should/could be doing so many of them since I'm officially of the age, but I detest wasting my time and energy for nadda.

I had two scheduled for this morning. Neither agent showed up.

I do the at home visits for that very reason. I schedule the visits when I do my housework; never print anything on paper, just pdf files; and I keep my cell close in case they call. They never do.
