Unauthorized Charge to Credit Card; What would you do?

Hi everyone,

Newish to the Forum and have been mystery shopping for 2 different MSCs for about 6 months. I've never had an issue mystery shopping, so this is the first time I have really felt the need to seek advice.

I recently performed a nightclub audit that was successfully completed. However, now that I am looking at my credit card statement, in addition to the authorized charge for drinks, food, etc., a second charge was created the day following my visit. I only used the card once and the first charge had the right amount I signed on the receipt.

Would the correct thing to do be to reach out to the scheduler, the credit card company, or to the nightclub?

I appreciate any advice. Thank you!

Is it a pending charge or has the charge posted?

If you're certain an unauthorized charge has been posted (basically once it's been posted and NOT pending), I'd report it directly to the MSC first. Typically, you have a certain turnaround time to report to your bank or credit card supplier. If possible, I'd also close the card right away and have one reissued with the unauthorized charge investigated and waived by your bank / credit card supplier.

One thing you have to think about when reporting this to the MSC is to think of all times when your card was not in your possession throughout the visit. That would be good information for them to have if you decide to report it to them as part of your bar audit.

Report it first to the credit card issuer! They are the only ones that can get it reversed! Then, write a nice email to your scheduler, explaining the situation and noting that you do understand that you have to go to the cc issuer to notify them of a disputed charge. No drama; just the facts.

I would do the same as Walesmaven. Uppermost, attention must be paid to your credit and credit card.
As walesmaven said, report it to your credit card company. You have 60 days to do this. By law, you are not responsible for unauthorized charges.

That's important. I would wait a day or two if the charge is pending. I check my credit cards often and have found some suspicious pending charges that disappear after the actual expenditure is posted.
I wouldn't wait. Call the credit card company right away. If it's a pending charge the credit card company can see that and confirm it never got posted. They can also see if the card was swiped or if the number was keyed into a terminal. If your number was stolen while at this club, presumably by an employee, the more info the client has to help pinpoint the thief, the better.

I think you have to contact to the service provider. You branch manager will provide you the complete statement and also solve your issue asap. smiling smiley

Inform the MSC to as I am pretty sure the nightclub would want to know if there was fraud occurring at their place...unless it was the owner that did it of course.
When using a credit card, the initial pending amount is the bill before you have the option to add a tip. Depending on the process, it is common to see a duplicate of the closed out final number. After several days the final amount posts and eventually the "other" pending amount dissappears. This happens with several forms of pre- authorization including gas pumps and online purchases when shipping is delayed.
