Overpayment? What to do...

Rec'd this email just now:

"This email is to inform you that we accidently paid you twice this afternoon.

Please log in your Paypal account, find one of the payments from __________ on 1/9/17, just click the detail of the payment and choose refund to process.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us. I apologize for the inconvenience. Thank you in advance."

Obviously their mistake - why should I refund the $$?

So what it's their mistake. It's the right thing to do. Should be no question about refunding the money that you didn't earn.
I don't think so. If they did, you could ask and expect the MSC to refund that but I seriously doubt you will be charged.
Paypal doesn't charge anything for a refund.. in fact, if you lost money when the funds came in, such as a fee, they return that back to the person too. It's the same with eBay and such. If you are paid $10 and they keep $1, when you click refund, it sends back the full $10 to the customer so Paypal loses their cut too. No extra charge to you.

OP, ditto to what all the others have said. It's the right thing to do. I was overpaid by an MSC this summer by $20.00, and let them know it. They were so grateful. They just took it out of the next shop fee for that same client. Don't burn bridges.
It is called HONESTY.

Yes, it absolutely does not matter whether or not you will get work from them in the future. It's poor character to keep the money when you know it's not yours to keep.

What if you were buying something online and you accidentally paid for it twice with your cc? It was your mistake. If you brought it to the attention of the online retailer and they said, "Hey, it was your mistake, we are not refunding it" you would not be happy, right?
I'm sitting here wondering why a four year forum member even asked if they should keep the money?!?!?!

@JASFLALMT didn't make it up, it was one of the Sassie MSCs. I can't have been the only one to receive this message.

FYI, there was no fee to refund the $$, and it was done almost immediately.
SO why even ask??????????????

Sorry, but you had absolutely no entitlement to the money. There's been instances in the past where banks have misdeposited large sums of money into the wrong account. The bank's mistake doesn't suddenly make it the account holder's money. In fact, withdrawing the money could be illegal, depending on the jurisdiction. And the bank can and will correct the misdeposit and can even withdraw interest, if any, that may have been earned on the deposit while it was in the incorrect account.

In the end, it all boils down to a question of integrity. In this case, the MSC caught their mistake. If they hadn't, would you have mentioned it to the MSC once you noticed the issue? I recently had an MSC overpay me $30 (I did two shops at $15 each, but they paid me at $30 each). I immediately notified the MSC who, in the end, just told me to keep it. I could have said nothing, but if they uncover the issue later and I haven't said anything, I could lose my standing with the company if they think I've been dishonest.

jrich, glad you returned the money...but in the future follow your instincts on ethics. If you had to ask you already knew that keeping it was wrong.
I have to say, it's amazing to me and very heartening that so many on here value integrity. You're all just the best.
When i got that i just refunded immediately, i could have requested they apply it to other assignments they owe me money on, but that money is not due me yet so why take what is not yours
I only got one notice from PayPal about the payment so I didn't know I was double paid until I received the email from them asking for it back. I thought that was odd.

I received quite a few company payments in the last 5 days. One of the companies, I could have sworn just paid me. I went back inside my paypal history to see if they paid me twice. I was wrong. They had not. But I was fully prepared to pay them back because it would have been the right thing to do. And if you KNOW they did pay you twice... you need to take care of it. And I think they would think highly of you... to mention it to them first! smiling smiley
