At what point do you consider someone short or tall?

A report used to have us estimate someone's height. I felt I had a read on being able to estimate that and we entered that figure.

Now, the options are: short, average, and tall. At what height is someone "tall"? I would use 6'0" or more. When is someone short? For me, I would use 5'4" or less.

Okay, I'm 5'3". So anyone that was taller than that would be considered tall. Anyone under 5'3" would be considered short by me.
I'm with you on the over 6' for men and under 5'4 for women. For women, over 5'7 is tall and under 5'8" for men is short to me. I don't know why... I'm told I'm tall often and I'm not even 5'6" (female). Heels make it hard to determine heights for women obviously. But I must say, most reports I write ask height by feet and inches.

Same goes for hair though - to me, shoulder length is medium for women but I've seen reports where that is considered long. Near the ears is medium for men. But a crew cut and shaved head are often reported as short if no "crew cut" option is available.

I think the Canadian and American averages are around 5'5" for women and 5'10" for men, but every source says something different. I'm 5'7" and put on a report that a woman was over 6 feet tall. They wanted clarification and asked how I gauged her height... well, I'm just a few inches shy if six feet in my winter boots, and I only reached her shoulders... that's how I know o_0

For an asian I am 6'2-3''(height changes throughout the day). A lot of people say asians are short, but height varies from region to region, i.e northern Chinese is generally taller than southern Chinese.

I'm 5'8", any man 5'10" or less is short to me. The average height for American men is 5'9". Female average is 5'3.8". This is what I found via the internet this morning anyway.

Shopping up and down the Colorado Rocky Mountain front range.
I never really know how tall someone is... Once, they were on a platform that I did not see until three shops later at the same location. I wear different heels and usually forget to factor in how tall I am in my shoes. Sometimes, people are seated and I don't see their legs and can't estimate their height. Some hair adds a few inches. Are we supposed to consider this? (would you have to explain? "Due to enthusiastically teased hair, the employee was above average. Without this hair, the employee would be only average."winking smiley

Yeah, and what would you write if you shopped a person who was physically handicapped and was in a wheelchair? How could one put that delicately?

When I was an editor for Ardent back when they wanted height in the crew member description, I had a shopper who told me that at 6'6", everyone looked short to him and he had a hard time gauging height. I would imagine so.
Yes, I had to write 3 descriptors for a seated man wearing a beanie with no hair showing. They wanted height, hair color and length, and facial hair and glasses only if they had it. I was at a loss, as they didn't accept body type, nationality, age, or anything else I could muster for this person. I think the report was sent back twice because I really had nothing to offer them!

Observing an employee sitting is anyone's guess...they are growing them bigger in L.A. the girls are over 5'5, many I see 5'7 or more, must be all the Veggies they eat here. I consider anything 5'3 or under short.

Live consciously....
I am 5'7" and I don't wear heels. I consider myself perfectly average and my mom is 5'5". If they are shorter than her, I would say they are short, which would be pretty true for my area. anything taller than 5'9" or 5'10" would be tall to me. Yes, I use my height to gauge the heights of other people.
If they can see what I got going on in my nose- short
If they cannot - tall
I'm 5'11
