Testing New Forum Feature

Dear Forum Members,

I'm testing a new forum feature that tracks the companies you are registered with. This should show up on threads that discuss companies. It's very basic right now, but I plan on adding more features to this, to make it as useful to you as possible.

Your thoughts, feedback, and bug reports are appreciated.

Jacob, I don't see how that will help us as shoppers but I hope you will be able to use the information to make the forum stronger.

What I need is a system that lets me enter a zip and all the jobs within X miles come up, no matter which company has them. I want to search out jobs by geographic location rather than search out jobs by first connecting to each MSC. If I can do that, I know who has work and where I need to sign up. I would be able to find work much more efficiently, and the MSCs would find shoppers ready to work in the places they have jobs.

Jacob, I think your new feature will help sort out the names on the list that no longer exist.

I do still find it useful information to learn for sure that a company doesn't operate any more just in case I come across the name somewhere else.
How about an option where I could click to remind me later to sign up with a MSC that I'm reading about? Then I could go to a list and click them off as I sign up.
Thank you everybody for the great feedback. I'm not going to be able to implement everything we want, but hopefully over time I'll be able to add useful features bit by bit.

Mary, I love your idea, and it's something I've thought about. I think it would require me building a new job board system and getting companies to submit their jobs to it, or somehow getting permission to use data from companies such as Sassie/Prophet. I would like to do something like this, but it would definitely be a larger project.
I'm feeling very dense at the moment. I don't quite get what this enhancement will do. I already have a list of the companies I am signed up with. Wouldn't everyone have a list.

Poor customer service? Don't get mad; get video.
Jacob, does the forum have the ability to host video? There have been so many people asking about video shops, I'm thinking about going to a restaurant on my own, record the entire service, edit out the unnecessary parts where there are no interactions so it ends up being a 10-15 minute video, just to give people an idea of what a video shop is like. Sound like something worth pursuing?

Finding MSC's that are on the way out (I know of one) would be helpful, as would rating companies for quick pay,
also, zip codes and outing companies that send emails for other states (most helpful). I know I'm ranting, or just
adding to the confusion.

Is the new forum feature included yet? I don't see anything newconfused smileyconfused smiley I too am ranting and adding to the confusion.smiling smileysmiling smiley
Okay, now I get it and am seeing the notice that I am signed up with the company mentioned by the OP. BUT, there is a serious glitch. When the OP violates the ICA rules and then the MSC name gets edited out of the post, Jacob's neat little widget remains, inadvertantly informing every reader as to whether or not they are registered with the company, by company name.

Jabob, you may nee the extra strength Excedrin for this headache!

Wales,

I fixed the bug on the Bed Bath & Beyond thead. It turns out that the code was matching part of the word Bath with the name of a company. That's been fixed. If there's any other specific examples you can point to, it would be helpful. The software only looks at what the current title is, and it's not 100% accurate -- but it is only ever based on what the actual current title of the discussion is.

Ok, so I looked again. Is the question about "being registered" the new feature? If so by answering Y or N, what is that proving? or indicating. If the item "new forum feature tracks the companies you are registered with" is it a helpful feature for the forum or US as shoppers?

So when you click that you *are* registered with a particular company, where does that information go? I haven't seen a place where I can go and see all the ones I've clicked 'yes' to.

Although there is a little blue box, over there to the right, with a list of links. I can't see it, it goes off the edge of my screen. Even when I scroll over, it just stays off the edge of my screen. What is that, and why is it formatted like that?

StormCloud,

here's where it goes:

It's pretty minimal right now. Still a work in progress.

That blue box on the right should be easier to spot! Looks like that's a bug I need to squash.
Aha! I see.

Next question: If one of the MSC's I clicked 'no' to, I later register with... can I change my answer to 'yes'?

And yeah, that blue box with only the first two letters of each link showing is a little annoying! I click the horizontal slider bar, and it just stays off the edge of the page! I just see:

Re
Fo

Me
Cl
De
Mc (or o?)
Ma

The rest is perpetually cut off! smiling smiley

So can everyone see this? I don't mind saying that I have done work for a certain MSC in the context of the thread, but it sure seems like it will be easier to identify which clients work with which MSCs based upon the poster's MSC history. Or, theoretically, I could just copy the MSCs of those who I gather are most profitable with their shopping.
Beyoden,

right now only you can see your own companies. I have no plans to make the information public, and if I did, I would give you both a warning, and the option to keep your information private.
You are awesome, how very thoughtful of a thing to do!
