Interesting read, dee

I lived on a major shopping street in Santa Monica during the 90's, in the early days of the 'coffee shop wars', so I remember the hullabaloo of Starbucks, Peet's, Coffee Bean, Seattle's Best and others battling out to have the most interesting drinks.

It made it easy when I started MSing because I had 7 coffee shops within a few blocks of my house. I'm still coming down from the caffeine high of the 90s!
I am dating myself, but an interesting bit of history is in the 60's in San Francisco (and big cities), coffee houses were our hangout, listening to poetry and drinking our expresso's, (being verylaid back and cool), much better than the now espresso at Starbucks. Nowadays I find Peet's the best coffee around. Starbucks is a habit, a meeting place, but the price is crazy for the cup of coffee you get. I will say the kids that work there, get full health ins., for 20 hours a week. They go to college and can fix their schedules around that. I have gotten to know them, and love them, and let's face it, Starbucks is a household name, and with free WIFI, a great gathering place.

Live consciously....
Interesting article....it pretty much sums up my love/hate relationship when I worked there. I managed a store that was just 2 miles from the main roasting plant and wanted nothing more than to "legitimize" my career path by getting into the taster program. They crow about quality and diversity and yet the only message I ever received from the powers that be was "don't do that...you must conform...we are on a hiring freeze....thats not how WE do it" while always trying to remain the free thinking hipster in the public eye.

It's the Northwest way, I've learned...
