A lot depends on the state. I did a car shop in Florida and the dealer offered to let me take a $100,000 German sports car home overnight [I could probably name the make since they aren't a client of Monterey, but I choose not to in the spirit of Forum rules]. I told them I wasn't comfortable because I was visiting a cousin and not totally familiar with the area around Tampa. The salesman said, "As long as the dealer tags are on the car, you aren't responsible in the event of an accident."
I've had some salespeople take me out for test drives with no dealer tags, just the paper tag advertising the dealership.
I love most of the Monterey shops. The reports aren't that hard, and the shops are fairly easy too.
