Just FYI: To my knowledge, the IRS's mandated Mileage Allowance does not apply to Independent Contractors.
Where are you getting that information? Mileage for business is tax deductible.

Per the IRS website,
Section 162(a) allows a deduction for the ordinary and necessary expenses a taxpayer incurs during the taxable year in carrying on any trade or business, including the cost of operating an automobile to the extent it is used in a trade or business.

Where do you see that would limit an IC operating a small business?

Equal rights for others does not mean fewer rights for you. It's not pie.

PrivateEyes,
Please search "mileage" and "All dates" for the definitive discussion of this matter. The IRS tax deduction on the shopper's Schedule C DOES apply to ICs. You will find links to the exact IRS flow chart that shows how and when it applies in differing circumstances.

There is nothing "mandatory" about taking the mileage deduction. Are you, perhaps, thinking that someone is claiming that it is mandatory that ICs be reimbursed for mileage??? that is not what is being discussed at all. No one that I know of has stated that. Some shoppers do, however, try to negotiate shopper distance bonuses based upon the 55.5 cents per mile IRS standard. Others use other methods to try to negotiate for a travel bonus.
