Well, it's official. Bestmark doesn't tell dealerships who shopped.

One of the smartest things I have done is set up a dummy voicemail on Google Voice with a different number. Now, the sales calls that I get from all the different dealerships I have shopped, either in person or by phone, pile up in faux voicemail. I have one girl that is so desperate to sell me a car that she has called me three times a week for over a month, with no response whatsoever from faux-me. I used a fake name when I call now too. I made the mistake the very first time of giving my real name, and they tracked down my home phone number.

Anyways, I'm assuming that if Bestmark was telling, these people would stop calling!

After you have done with the shop tell them that you have already purchased another car and are not interested in getting a car any more. This should work.

But setting up "a dummy voicemail on Google Voice with a different number" sounds as a great idea. How do you do that?
You go to gmail.com and set up a fake email account with a fake name. Then you go to google voice and get a google voice number to attach to your fake email. The calls will come in to the number you give google voice for verification. I used my land line for it. The caller ID works better than on cell phones so you can see right away who is calling.

I have two fake gmail accounts with google voice numbers. One email is a screen name type so I can make up any name I want. The other is a fictitious name.
The only down side to google voice is you are only allowed to assign two gmail accounts to each verified line. Hubby and I each have a google phone number linked to the land line. I create new gmail accounts every so often because I don't the number to be recognized. It happened once when I was addressed by an old alias using the same google phone number.

I love the block caller feature for those that don't listen when I say I am out of the market. They hear a message that the phone is no longer in service. That definitely stops the calls!
If you don't like the phone or unlink it after you create it you can get as many google voice numbers as you want. I have 4, none of which are actually linked to a phone. I use them for things that I don't expect a call from or don't want to answer if I did, so I don't care that it never rings a number. It's been so long since I created them I don't remember how but I know you could do it at one time. Perhaps they've changed?

I've created several in the past few months. I shop different areas for Bestmark and a couple other MSCs that do phone shops, and I usually need a number with a local area code to give them for callbacks. Plus GV will let you make a call and have your GV# come up on caller ID. There are some sneaky uses for it too if you manage to get possession of your little brothers cell for 5 minutes, but I digress. I haven't had any problems with verifications either.

I too made the ultimate mistake of using my real name for the car shops. I have not done any since but I may just do this voice mail thing if I can figure it out.

It never ceases to amaze me the good tips and tricks I get from here. I only hope that I am able to contribute as I start this new adventure. Thank you everyone.

O.o o.O

Happily shopping New England and beyond!!!!!
I never test drive thinking they have your real name and could remember you at other dealirships as a shopper
If the shop requires a test drive you have to take one.

Yeah, can't use a fake name on a test drive. The fake name/voicemail thing I just use for the phone and internet shops. I've had one dealership call me every day this week. Well, last week actually. The neat thing about the voicemail is it comes in looking like email, and you can assign names to the incoming phone numbers, so I don't have to sit there trying to figure out that 555-4600 is dumass Hummer/Pontiac.
