Starting with Coyle

I began my recent shopping career by doing Apartment shops with Coyle and found this forum shortly after. And, I have to say, even the harder reports for other companies seem like a walk in the park in comparison to Coyle's surveys. Especially apartment shops.

I know some people recommend that you not START with such a demanding company like Coyle but I think it's made me much more equipped to handle all sorts of shops with ease.

Anyway, just a different thought than what I've been seeing/ hearing on this forum. Sometimes you just have to throw yourself in the water to see if you can swim... lol, or at least I tend to operate better that way.

Also, I wish more companies provided writing examples of what they are looking for the way Coyle does. I love that Coyle basically makes it impossible to fail, unless you don't follow and research all direction.

Thank you for your comments. I just signed up with Coyle because I need to get out of my comfort zone. Your points are well-made. I will be sure to read Coyle's writing examples. You are right. It does help to see examples of what is expected.

Hi,
I signed up with Coyle on 5/9 and have applied for almost a dozen shops. I've gotten NOTHING. How quickly were you assigned your shops and what tips do you have for getting shops assigned to you? I work with about 2 dozen other companies, performing everything from hotels to bars to cars and phones so I'm not sure why I'm not getting anything from Coyle. Thanks,
What's funny is that when I first started many years ago and was totally naive about companies, I did lunch shops for Coyle, but the easier ones at businesses (cafeteria types). I just thought that was what I had to do. Granted the reports were not as intense as the ones with the other Coyle site, but it got my feet wet real fast. I also routinely did IKEA shops when they were with a highly respected company and I almost enjoyed them. Well, as time has gone on, I am now much more leary of taking any Coyle assignments due to the time involved for completing reports and, of course, I won't go near an IKEA. (disclaimer: IKEA is NOT with Coyle..just an example of my early naivete) I like to do the shops that pay me the most for the least amount of time involved. The new client sounds tempting though. I'm just too busy right now and pretty much intimidated by the memory of taking all day to finish a fine dining or even burger restaurant. If I had the extra money and time, I would probably focus on their travel locations like some of you do, but I need the money and time is limited.

I had the same problem when I first started and because of that reason I actually just stopped requesting them. Then, one day, they sent out an email regarding apartment shops they needed people for (they emailed me directly and asked that I directly email them back). I offered to take three via email, which was A LOT for my very first mystery shopping experience ever! lol. Anyway, they then signed me up for them on the Coyle site. Then, a week or so later, I saw another apartment shop pop up on Coyle's site, for the same company, and I applied and got it. Then I applied for a restaurant and movie theater jobs and got them both. However, I will say that I still have yet to be accepted for any hotel assignments. I'm just hoping after a few more restaurants and such that I will be eligible.

If I were you, I would reply to any direct emails you get from them. They typically fill up pretty fast (they emailed me about one a long time ago and, 2 hours later, when I applied it was gone), so reply quickly if you can.

I also have the advantage of living in a busy metropolitan area, so I might have had more options available to me.

Good luck!

I almost took one of those IKEA shops when I first started out! In the end, I couldn't make myself do it because IKEA is just too darned busy and frustrating on a day that I'm not on an assignment. lol

I was actually interested in the legitimacy if this company. I work for about 25-30 other companies and was interested in Coyle but saw that they are not accredited, have an F rating, and have numerous complaints on them with the BBB. What gives ladies and gents? Worth it? Not worth it?

I really like Coyle. Granted, I've only been shopping with them a few months and I do wish they had a more diverse portfolio but overall, it's worth it to me. I would never consider spending $200 on dinner (unless it was my anniversary) but being reimbursed for those expenses, makes it worth it to me. Then again, I love fine dining and upscale accommodations. They pay isn't anything to really brag about and the reports are really really long. So if you're only doing it for the shopping fee, I'd probably skip it. But it's a nice way to pay for an experience you may not have had otherwise. smiling smiley

Also, I have found them easy to work for as long as I read everything they provide and follow instructions well. They want things done a certain way, so you have to be quite careful in how you present your report. With that being said, I've always been paid fully for my assignments without any issue. One time I had a horrible stomach flu and missed their email regarding a followup on my report. It took me nearly three days for me to get back to them and 12 hours past their final deadline to reply. They still took my corrections, when I finally was coherent enough to check email, and paid me my shopping fee and expenses.

The BBB is not the place to check mystery shopping companies. Check what is being said on the forums to get balanced reviews. The BBB will often automatically lower the rating for mystery shopping companies because they are considered home based businesses and there is so much fraud in the category. Next you are going to get all sorts of shoppers, often not very good shoppers, who complete assignments incorrectly and have the mistaken notion they should be paid and/or reimbursed anyway which is not how this business works. Those shoppers don't understand they are not employees. Just like they wouldn't pay a plumber hired to fix the toilet who instead removed it and left them with nothing, the MSCs are not going to pay us for an unusable assignment rife with mistakes.
