Has anyone done the shop where you purchase a phone and $40 plan and then return the phone and cancel the plan? I would love any feedback. If you already have a plan with that client, does that make it harder to complete the shop?

I did the shop with no issues.

When I got to the correct location, I was the only one in the store. The sales dude was awesome. As he was setting my phone up, I looked at the huge map on the wall. Basically, it said that 94% of America had coverage for talk and text. That was the purple area. The little sporadic orange dots represented 4GLTE coverage. That was enlightening.

Sales dude told me that if I needed to do a return, the activation fee would not be refunded. I made sure to use my debit card in case there was a problem.

I went in the next day to make the return. Dude wasn't working, and when the SA asked if there was a problem, I told her I could not get an internet connection at work. She gave me a full refund on the spot, including the activation fee, which was dude's commission.

The activation fee was $30, and I "bought" a $200 phone.

I did one of these shops a few years ago, and it worked okay to return it, but I did have a ding for a hard credit pull on my credit report, which stayed on for two years. It didn't affect the score that much, but it was a ding nonetheless. If you do a lot of these, the credit bureaus could know that you keep running credit checks to get a phone.
