I have not seen a shop where BK was the client, though BK locations were shopped for a soda company client.
Burger King is not shopped anymore. They did a reveal shop in a test market recently where I had to take pictures of signage for a new product. But as far as service shops, a manager of one of the Burger Kings told me they had gone to receipt surveys and no longer used mystery shopping.

But is it actually by BK, or a different company, like the soda shops?

I do remember BK service shops in my area a couple years ago, but have not seen them since them.
I have declined them based on distance and compensation, or lack thereof, but as the scheduler has described them, they are definitely BK shops which require a meal purchase.
Since BK is all over the country, if you are only seeing ones where the distance and compensation don't make them worthwhile, it may well be that it is a particular owner of several locations who is having them shopped. These are, after all franchises. I have seen that with gas stations operating with different gas company names that the locations were all owned by a particular landlord/supplier. I have seen that with Subway stores that are owned by a particular owner of a group of franchises in the area, so some of the area Subways are shopped while others not, and on occasion when there is a nationwide shop of Subways, the local locations get shopped twice, once by the national entity and once by the local franchise owner.
On the signage survey I did 2 BK's. ! was a company store the other was a franchsee.
Signage surveys are frequently performed by the outside vendor who is providing the promotional materials. Movies and amusement parks, for example, pay BK to promote these non-food products with special games/gimmicks and signage. Menu surveys are frequently done by competitors.
I was quite surprise to learn that some dealer shops that gave me some free work on my Lexus were performed for an American car company.
I just saw Burger King, they changed MSC's and there are plenty in Georgia and various places, nothing close to me.

Live consciously....
I sure like BK better than McD's. Wish they were here. But then my Weight Watcher points would get used a lot less efficiently. lol 4.4 pounds for first week! Yes! Wish we could shop WW meetings. lol

I share you thoughts, iblessyah, BK has a much more imaginative and changing menu that the Arches guys.
I shop BK, but the compensation hasn't been enough lately to make up for the gas used to get to the nearest location. It's definitely shopped, though, and not just for 3rd parties
Then why do you shop them? Maybe if less people shopped them they would raise their fees.
I did BK last year, the mystery - reveal type of shops. I hope they will have more in the future.
