When I first got into the business I did a lot of apartment shops. After 6 months I decided that they were more trouble than they were worth. Trying to reach the target was but one problem. Many times I showed up for the appointment and the target was not available. They had gone to lunch, on vacation or otherwise MIA. I once showed up for an appointment and the office had been closed for the day. There were many times I just sat and spinned my wheels as I waited for my target. Over the last several years I have found that I no longer have the time for these types of shops.

I have done several target shops, but I prefer to avoid them. When I go to the website and do a search, I am looking for "shop anyone". The target shops, in my opinion, don't compensate me for the time and energy that is required trying to get the target to pick up the phone. I find it time consuming to have to sit around and let time go by before I can call back again. Part of my concern with target shops is, I know that you won't believe it, I don't care to own a cell phone. Without a cell phone, I am really grounded at home until I reach the target. I will take on a target shop if I don't have anything else scheduled. Contacting the target is one thing, then I find the paperwork to be redundant.

Yes, it is. Especially since they almost never respond to email unless it originated to you from them! But I will refrain, tempting though it is.

I did use the method either you or sneakers posted here about sending a "I would be happy to help when it is in my area" to the Illinois one, and actually got an apology email from the company about sending me something so far out of my way. I will no name the co. here, but one of their people posts here occasionally, and she was not the one who sent the apology, so they seem to be a class act. They never appear to have anything here in HI, so I am not sure. But based on the response I got and the postings here from the other employee, I would try them out, if they did have something.

> I agree that it sounds like a training issue with
> that scheduler.
>
> On the Sassie system, the scheduler gets a choice
> right before sending the email: Zip code, area
> code, state or country. Almost all of the time
> zip code is chosen. In almost four years of doing
> this, I have personally used country three times.
>
> Sometimes I get nasty grams from shoppers because
> a shop is inconvenient for them. One that comes
> to mind was when I was scheduling shops on Shelter
> Island, NY. When I would send the posting out by
> 10 miles, some parts of CT would be included.
> Granted, it's across water, but it's 10 miles
> nonetheless. If I had a dollar for every shopper
> who sent me a mean email about it, I wouldn't be
> working today. But, my only options were to turn
> off ALL shop postings for them or just ask them to
> delete what didn't apply.

Thank you, Jill, for telling us what the set options are in Sassie. I never knew how it was set up before reading this.

I certainly ignore a lot of stuff that is inconceivably far outside of my shopping area and I recognize that "my shopping area" extends about 10 miles north, 20 miles west, 25 miles south and 20 miles southeast. But no scheduler would know that. 30 mile radius lets me see what is available and if by some quirk there are enough shops east, northeast or northwest of me to make a profitable route, I can do that if I can get the times to work.

But the companies that send me 5 emails a day, none of which are within 100 miles of me I just discontinue the emails. I will drop by their website from time to time to see if something is available, but not often.

I recognize that schedulers get desperate when they can't fill jobs and hope perhaps people know someone in the area they can alert to the job. But that doesn't mean they need to email out notifications of every shop, everywhere in the country, every day until it gets filled, to everyone.
Dee is obviously figuring you are being offered or have been sent a check, generally between about $2700 and $4900 from a company that looks/sounds legitimate but you never signed up with or requested specific jobs. This is the standard scam that is going around. They want you to do a few jobs for them, several sound reasonable and then one or more are to wire transfer money to a third party. Sounds great but the problem is that the check is bogus and will not be determined to be bogus until it is presented on the account on which it is written and either that bank or the account owner will determine it is a forgery.

In the normal course of things a legitimate mystery shopping job pays a fee of between $5 and $20, with some more complex jobs paying more. Generally you will wait 4-8 weeks after doing and reporting a job to receive payment for your work. Many jobs require you spend $1-5 so that you have a receipt to submit to prove you were at the right place at the right time, for which most of the time you are reimbursed. In my years of shopping I have never gotten money up front for a shop except when I was sent a gift card to use on a specific shop that was testing cashier response to a gift card.

Not quite sure what you mean by reviewed the site and toured the examples. Prophet is the reporting system used by a number of shopping companies, just as many of them use the SASSIE reporting system. So while you may initially look at a particular company from a website that looks unique, when you sign up you will get shifted over to their signup site which is using the Prophet software. Eventually your assignment requests, information downloads and report uploads will all be done for that company through their 'Prophet' site.

There are these days four major reporting systems used by companies, with only a handful of companies operating their own unique website reporting systems. The systems are Prophet, Sassie, ClientSmart and ShopMetrics. An advantage to shoppers of using one of the major systems is that you learn very quickly where to find what you need so you aren't 'reinventing the wheel' every time you sign up with a new company.

I did two shops about two weeks ago that had to be Mailed not faxed or emailed. I put them in the mail the very next day. After almost a week I got a email saying they had not received my receipts, please send them in. I logged in to the site and they showed them not received. I waited another couple of day and I got emails everyday that they had not been received. I finally sent an email to the scheduler saying I had mailed them, gave the dates, etc. I got an email back saying not to bug her, they were backed up because everyone of those shops had to be mailed. Hellooooo, you are bugging me!!!

Hi,

I live in the metropolitan DC area and have been mystery shopping for a month now.

It's a lot of fun so far, but I'm being really cautious about what jobs i take and with what companies. I 'm looking forward to joining your community so I will know which companies are great and which ones are stinkers.

Thanks!
