Thank you, Sneakers, the dinner was good, with the boys, DIL and grandchildrens, DIL who planned the dinner didn't have any idea of how to cook the bird, she called her mother for help and this nice lady refused to give her a hand (she don't like my son), so MIL went to the rescue and we cooked the bird and all the trims, now she knows how to.

Arch--Your morning activity is admirable. :)

I'm not a vegan, was just trying to cover all bases for unusual celebrations. A friend, however is vegan. Any main dish can be substituted for turkey, since I also doubt you can duplicate the taste with tofu. The point is to make something special. And as everyone in her family isn't vegan, I guess she just skips the turkey and eats the other dishes.

KV--try recipes from the internet. But you can cook anything that you consider special, since Thanksgiving should be about celebration and family, not about food.

My holiday will be a bit unusual. My congregation has a dinner every year for members who have no other plans. The number of diners varies greatly; one year we'll have 75, the next 16. We all contribute one dish, and there's a real sense of community. Some of these people I've known for 30 years, other might be new acquaintances.

As done since the mid 1980's, I will be working in a homeless shelter in downtown Yonkers until mid-day and will then have Thanksgiving dinner with my family. I am expecting a big crowd due to the abysmal economic downturn.

Those vegan Tofu-turkeys commonly sold are not too good I am told...and if you ar really into this stuff, I need a organic shampoo that will add body to my thinning hair. Dr. Bronners is good, but my hair always seemed too matted down after using it.

Yes. I think it is a combination of factors. First, with credit so tight for the retailers this year, they are bringing in less merchandise. Therefore they will have less stuff to clearance if it doesn't sell. Second, with shoppers in the most fiscally conservative mode they have been in decades due to the economy, the retailers don't have much of a holiday season to look forward to. These two factors feed on each other such that stores are unlikely to feel the need to slash prices to move merchandise and without the slashes shoppers are less likely to buy.

The recession of 2001 was not very deep though customers were careful. It was an excellent time for high quality items at clearance prices because the stores were fully stocked and needed to clear inventory. That does not appear to be happening this year. The stores have also wised up that we give gift cards rather than purchase full price products and the recipient can stretch the gift further with the after holiday sales. For the past couple of years the after holiday sales have not included heavy price cuts because they know those gift cards are burning holes in pockets to be spent.

I let my mystery shopping business 'buy' my laptop 3 years ago to minimize my bottom line profit. Last year my business 'bought' me a new desktop to replace a 5+ year old one. This year business has been off enough that with this year's generous mileage deduction and such I will have no paper profit, so it doesn't even make sense for me to get a new laptop in 2008 unless the price is dirt cheap.

I hear you. One major mall in my area just announced potential filing for bankruptcy protection. I know retailers want to hold on through Christmas, but I'm not seeing good prices either. It looks bleak, even for electronics. I worry about my laptop and desktop, both of which are 3 years or older. It would take a heck of a price for me to spend money now, I don't even consider my mad money as disposable income.

I haven't been tempted to try Thunderbird and in fact I prefer go to my specific gmail account or hotmail or whatever to deal with my email from there when I'm ready. I've managed to keep my laptop healthy for 3 years but these days am downloading only updates to software rather than installing new software. I don't have a whole heck of a lot of memory on it and due to age am not thrilled with the notion of slapping in more memory which may not be compatible with my next laptop. New software and upgrades have gotten so memory hungry it doesn't seem to take much any more to start getting a "low memory" warning and machine in slow mo while it assigns hard drive space for memory use. Not a pretty picture.

I've been scanning the leaked 'Black Friday' ads for a laptop or memory at fantastic prices and they just aren't there. In fact none of the Black Friday ads I've seen yet will make it worthwhile to face the crowds the day after Thanksgiving. For retailers to be crying so about poor sales due to the economy they sure aren't encouraging sales with good prices. If this is what the holiday season is going to look like, I'll wait until next year.
