I'm pretty new myself, so take that into consideration. I think that when you sign up for new companies, it can give you a leg up. However, once you have proven yourself with a company, it probably doesn't matter anymore. I personally found it with the $20, but I'm not planning on going further and getting gold.
As far as the certification itself, I did not feel that I learned anything from it. It's very basic information.
