Hotel Shop - HELP!

Ugh - I think I screwed up. I completed a hotel shop in September for a company I always shop. The scheduler sent out an email in Oct with the list for November. I responded that I didn't know the requirement for time between shops, but if I was able, I'd love to complete it in November. She went ahead and scheduled me. I signed the guidelines, as I always do and returned them.

So....I'm scheduled to complete it tomorrow. However, in re-reading everything it says

"The same credit card holder may not conduct the assignment within 90 days of a prior audit at the same property."

The MS company doesn't answer after 3:45 PM on Fridays (of course) and doesn't repsond to emails on the weekend. I went ahead and changed the reservation to my fiance's name and his credit card - do you think this will be okay? I don't want to cancel completely because I don't know because I don't want to screw them up if they need it shopped tomorrow. Keeping my fingers crossed this will be okay - I think it's better than just canceling on them. Any thoughts/help???

I would suspect it will be okay. He will need to sign the credit card slip unless you are a co-signor on his account. Any indication in the instructions such as "You must go alone?"
Nope - it's for 2 adults. The company has always been fair with me and I tend to think if I mentioned it may be too soon and she scheduled me anyways, it 'should' be okay (I just get so nervous, especially with it being a hotel - and HATE when I can't contact them on weekends!)

And it specifically says the same 'credit card holder' so I would think if it's on a different credit card, I should be okay.

-Just a shame because I wanted the points on my account, which they let me keep. Oh well! Next time I'll read and ask questions before Friday evening! Lesson learned.

Thank you!!!

I have my first motel assignment coming up. I already know that it is in an area where there is hardly ever an opening. Should I ask the MSP if I should make a reservation way in advance? Should I go in and not get a room because they are full? I'm supposed to evaluate things while I'm there. I wonder if I could evaluate and then buy something with a receipt, such as gum in the evening and a newspaper in the morning? I guess I'll ask the MSP when the time comes near.
Ask the MSP now, not later. most hotel shops require an overnight stay in order to evaluate the room, breakfast, etc.

Based in MD, near DC
Shopping from the Carolinas to New York
Have video cam; will travel

Poor customer service? Don't get mad; get video.
Make reservation as early as possible to be safe, I believe they ask you to do that. There are many things you can take to upload, as brochure, cards are usually on the counter, stationary that has hotel name and such....decent hotels leave newspapers at your door in the morning, so wouldn't need to buy that.

Live consciously....

Absolutely awesome!!!
Any hotel shops I have done they always require you to call the hotel itself, not the chain number and book your stay because they want you to evaluate the telephone skills of the front desk. Check your instructions, I am sure that is what they want as well.
Thank you for the fabulous help…It was much appreciated…Sweet dreams to all…

Shopping the mighty MO...
Just completed a bar and restaurant in an upscale hotel. It took me all day to do the report, I swear. They wanted timings on everything, information on bussers, barmen, wait staff, food, ambience etc., etc., Does anyone out there have good tips for any of this, particularly the timings?
That's why I don't jump at them anymore. I think it would sabotage the meal if I have to document everything that happened. This company should move to video. If the bartender is stealing and giving away drinks, then it would be hard to argue with vide.

Perhaps you could mail in the food as well, so you don't have to be bothered tasting it....

I'm kidding, obviously, but my point is that just strapping a camera to your person does not exactly tell the entire experience. Some bar theft may be hard to see on camera, but easy to spot for an experienced evaluator.
I've done hotel shops for A-Closer-Look and Freeman Group Solutions. The schedulers and editors are compassionate in making sure I have everything to do a successful and fun shop.
I think you should be okay using your boyfriend's credit card. It sounds like that requirement is so you don't show up on their computer's radar. By using another card and name, that shouldn't happen.
You mentioned it to your scheduler and you were still assigned to the shop, so my bet is you'll be fine. Fingers crossed for you.

Whether the barmen and wait staff had good tips was entirely up to you, I'm afraid.

Some MSC don't allow it but others don't mind...that is using your phone as if you are texting to write notes. If I am alone then I think looking like I'm texting throughout my meal is not unnatural at all. If there are two of us, we will sometimes do the daily paper crossword while we wait. We just circle the clue numbers that match the times we need. You can also take turns going to the bathroom and then making notes while you are in a stall. We have used the napkin to draw out a 'new building design' and the measurements are the timings. For descriptions, the 1st room might be labeled BL7 (actually meaning the 1st person we spoke to, ie the hostess, was 5'7" with Blonde, Long hair). Each room would have a similar label for other staff. When the staff are near, we are busy discussing this new layout. A phone that has a digital timer in it can be used to record elapsed times for all significant events and then afterwards you can translate it into actual times. Once you leave the facility, get out of sight and then fill out your questionaire and make notes. You can also used personal codes for things like eye contact, smiling, identifying themselves, etc, so you have less to actually remember once you leave.
Hope that is helpful.
Bena: Thanks so much this is very helpful. I found the amount of information needed overwhelming and turning it into bite size pieces like this makes it manageable. My appreciation.

My nemesis has always been appearances. As soon as a person was out of sight, they were also out of mind. I can remember their names but I can't remember what they look like. I found that after talking to someone, like the server, if I momentarily close my eyes and 'take a mental photo' of them, it helps later when I am trying to remember what they looked like. I still have difficulties with appearances, hence the coding system, but I am getting better at it.

I've found that the more shops I do, the better my memory gets. I think it is like playing bridge. When I first started playing bridge I couldn't remember how many trump cards were accounted for. After playing for a while, I could remember not the trump suit but all 52 cards. The same thing happened with math. Once I stopped using a calculator all the time, my brain remembered how to do arithmetic.

I think it is the same with mystery shopping. I think a person's memory improves with practice. Additionally you get familiar with what is 'normal' and so you don't have to work at remembering the 'normal', just the 'unusual' or 'wrong' stuff.
