Definitely not necessary to become a mystery shopper! What it means is that the trade association of the companies that solicit us to do shops got its hand in your pocket for $15.
Thank you. I just signed up for Strategic Reflections. I've never conducted thisntype of assignments before. Is there any companies that you can recommend? And are we allowed to work for different companies at a time, or not?
You are encouraged to work with many companies. Shoppers are Independent Contractors and it protects the companies we work for from IRS questions about whether we are employees or not when we work for a number of different companies.

Virtually every assignment you do will be a new and learning experience. I generally suggest that folks sign up first with Corporate Research International, Bare, Maritz and Market Force (blue portal) because these companies are perhaps more accustomed to working with new shoppers than most. They have nationwide clients and offer job specific training in some cases and reasonably simple shops while you get the hang of this.
lupaix, when I started out I became MSPA Silver and plan to go Gold. It is a worthwhile cause cuz it shows the companies that you are taking this seriously. Many people will say it is a rip off and not worth it but it was a great move for me... I got more shops due to being Silver. It is only $15, the fee is tax deductable and the test is easy breezy.
Certification was invented by the MSPA to put money in their pockets. I am not certified to shop and I'm offered the same shops the rest of them get. I've hit 18 years of shopping and know that certification is bovine effluvia.

Look at this website and you will see at the bottom where there are shops from A to Z. Look at the postings from other shoppers and then make the decision. The more you apply with the more shops you may receive. If you are doing this part time, be careful as you can overload and then you will mess up a shop which you do not want to do. If this is your lifeline, then go for it. Just time yourself and the shops. Keep a calendar of when you have shops with whom so you can pace yourself.

Good luck!

I signed up for the MSPA Silver Certification within a few weeks of starting my mystery shopping venture in September, and it was definitely worth the $15. I had companies actually contact me after receiving the silver. I just completed the Gold Certification on January 2nd. I hope that it does the same for me. At the very least, the videos were excellent training.

I have the Silver Certification and it has given me a few shops I would not have been assigned without it.
In 4 months it has paid for itself 10 fold.
