Reveal Lunch Shop

I'm doing a reveal lunch shop at a wings place tomorrow. This is my first reveal! I'm kind of nervous! LOL
How do you introduce yourself to the manager? Do you give the company name, or just say, "I'm a mystery shopper..."

I have to award a gift card or an "Oops" card to the manager for the server. I really hope they do well and get the gift card!

I loved the Reveal that I did!

My DH and I ate our lunch in the car - the line was out the door, and we (fortunately) had a "To-Go" order. When I went back in, I went up to the register and just said, "My husband and I were in here earlier is it possible for me to see a Manager?"

I said it with a serious expression - poor girl probably thought she was in trouble! When the Manager came out, I introduced myself with my First Name and said, "I just wanted to tell you that XXXXX gave my husband and I some awesome service, and would like to know if you would please give her this certificate!"

He said, "Ohhhh, so you're a mystery shopper?!" We had a laugh, and he thanked me for letting him know, shook hands and I left. I would have loved to stay around to see the young lady get the certificate, but I couldn't!

I usually just offer a warm and friendly smile and say, "Hi! I'm your mystery shopper and you have just been shopped!" If I am not addressing the manager, I then ask for the manager. I stay upbeat whether I am presenting a success or an 'oops' and follow what the instructions for my shop say. I am not going to comment on the visit positively or negatively beyond what my shop indicates I can say, so even if Suzy did a whiz bang job, her success or failure depended on the specific criteria. Thus if there is a checklist I can share, I will go down the list pointing to the items saying, "Suzy offered me an upsell when I purchased my ____, she was polite and friendly, she provided me my receipt without my needing to ask for it and she stood on her head in the corner whistling 'Dixie'. Congratulations!" Often I can't share the criteria for success so it is simply, "Suzy did exactly what she was trained to do. Congratulations!" If they failed there usually is a script that goes something like, "Suzy did not do all of the required behaviors so needs to review her XYZ training notes. There will be future opportunities for success over the next _____ weeks/months."
@ geauxcj.... I also had one at a Wings place yesterday my first. He did not mention the 6 wings and NCAA tournament but he did get the $50 one for recommending the coke beverage. I was happy for him. He was a very good server with a great sense of humor. He was grinning from ear to ear and it couldn't have gone to a nicer person.

I have another one coming up and I can't wait. I love to see the expression on their face, and the manager's for that matter.

Hope you had fun doing it and it was a positive one.
I did one yesterday and was so excited to give out a gift card IOU. The server only did one thing out of 2 so she got the $50 card. The manager said," Oh, she only got the 50." I was so let down, I thought someone would be happy.

I did one yesterday as well. The manager was not friendly at all. He said, "Oh, yeah, that promo started today and I haven't had time to get all the s#$t out." Rude, rude, rude. The waitress did get $50. I left the place feeling weird.
I did one yesterday and the manager seemed angry that they only got $50. I was worried for the server, and hung around in the foyer to see what happened. I saw him talk to her and she got really excited and ran into the kitchen so I guess he was upset with himself? I wonder if they get a matching award.
Wow, I haven't done any reveal shops yet. Do you worry about your cover being blown? I saw this one reveal job but it was at a location I have done shops at before for other MS companies and I didn't want blow my cover there.

How does that work? Do you only take reveal jobs in areas you don't normally shop in?
I'm crossing my fingers for tomorrow. I'd love to give the gift card out smiling smiley

Thanks for the responses!

Great question JennJac!

I will not do a reveal in a location where I even occasionally have other shops. Generally there are not nearly as many reveals as they are usually for a specific promotion of short duration. So I have done reveals on behalf of a soda pop company at small restaurants that are otherwise not shopped and at fast food places where I would not accept a shop due to fee structure and requirements. Otherwise I do reveals at some gas stations where I do not do other shops.

A few years back I did a reveal prize shop at a sandwich place where there is very high staff turnover. 6 months later I did a regular shop and the guy behind the counter I recognized as having been there before. I just went about my business and worried he would out me because he seemed to be really watching me (watching me watching him in a reflection off the window). There were no repercussions, but it was one of those hold your breath moments.
Don't forget to order a coke. Mine just got voided because I couldn't have the coke.

See my other post..........

Still it was worth it to see the servers face.

The server and the manager said they didn't know what the other part of it was, the 6 wings and mentioning the NCAA tournament so he didn't have a chance for the $100.
I read this post before I did this shop yesterday. Thanks so much guys for the great feedback.

It was the server's 3rd day at the job and she got the $50 gift card. I'm sure it was a nice surprise, but she wasn't personable or engaging as required by this particular establishment. Nevertheless, she did what was required to get the gift card.

Sincerely,
H.A.R.D. at work

When I did mine the employee did not get the award. The manager was really rude asking which employee was it. Well the employees are required to wear both first and last names on their name tags at this place (creepy huh?) so there was no hiding it.

He then said to me they know they are supposed to ask and upsell. Then he berated her in front of everyone. The sad part is my son was in the next line and his cashier did everything perfect.

Then I had to report and make yet another trip to FedEx the gift cards back.
