Seriously thinking about editing...

This might get a little long. Apologies in advance. smiling smiley

I currently work full time and MS on the side. I've been looking hard for a new job but I haven't gotten any calls back.

I did get an email about editing for an MSC I've worked with in the past. 20 hours a week and "competitive" pay.

I'm thinking about applying for the editing job. If I got it, I could cut back my hours at my current job, do the editing, and also do more MSing. I would need to make at least $1500/mo between MSing and editing. Is this feasible? How much can I expect to make editing?

Any advice or insights would be much appreciated. smiling smiley

I think I know the e-mail. My understanding is editing is just like anything else in the MS world, it all depends on the companysmiling smiley The same e-mail was posting for schedulers which requires working a set schedule. Those jobs would certainly have to involve employee status.

For your MSing, are you approaching those numbers at all? Are you often seeing postings for new jobs or is it the same old where you run the risk of being out of rotation for long periods of time? Will you be able to do some traveling to increase the MS income and be up to editing while you are on the road?

Most ICAs state that you cannot work as an MS if you are an employee of any other MSC. Be sure you understand exactly where you stand on that matter! I know someone who tried to walk both sides of the street, got caught, lost the part time employment and is now persona non grata with most MSCs for having violated a few dozens of ICAs. Blackballing may be illegal, but there's nothing to prevent MSCs from publishing the names of ICA violators!

When I as editing, I disclosed my employee status to MSCs that asked me to take jobs, and none had an issue with it.

I think they were exited at the prospect of having shops submitted that required very little editorial ;^)

On the other hand, I had very little time to shop, so it was just a few shops per week at the most.
I edited and mystery shopped simultaneously for a while as an independent contractor. My pay for editing varied depending on the project, and the pay was determined by the number of reports I edited, not the number of hours I worked.

In a good month, my editing pay was more than $1,000. I also enjoyed getting a behind-the-scene look at our industry, and seeing other shoppers' reports and sometimes learning from them.

On the other hand, a client renegotiated (downward) my fee and was late in paying other editors and me several times. There were also other issues that I did not foresee before I became an editor.
I have started editing and really like it. From my experience, editing comes in waves. One week, there are hundreds of reports to be edited (obviously not just by me) and then the next week, there may be less than 15 edits for the entire week. In my case, I don't think I could bank on it being a consistent expectation of pay. I really enjoy it so I was thinking of looking for more editing jobs with various companies. It is an interesting side of the business and it has actually helped me complete my MS reports more effectively and get more 10 ratings instead of the usual 8 or 9 ratings that I typically get. You should try it. What would you have to lose?

Penny, I do part time work as an editor for a MS company and the hiring process was quite extensive. In order to obtain work as an editor, you need to have a strong grasp of the English language and excellent spelling and grammar skills. In your question above, you did not put a capital on the word "i", and "I am involving as a Mystery shopper" does not make sense. I would suggest that perhaps editing is not the ideal job for you.

I really enjoy editing as well, I feel like I found my true calling. But unfortunately it pays less than MSing. It would be great if I could quit MSing altogether and edit for several MSCs. So if any of you know any MSCs looking for editors, let me know smiling smiley
