video shopping

Yeah I know there's a lot here. However, I looked at something called a pocket camcorder @costco.Samsung $119 w/ rebate. Model 300 something. Is this the type of thing that one would use for shopping?

Obviously, I have no clue.

The shopping units have a camera disguised as a button. Google PV-500 and you can find some picssmiling smiley

cynb,
If you go to the VSN forum site you will find an area that is all about minimum technical standards for MS video/audio recorded products. In addition, the camera must be capable of being hidden inside of something like a shirt button. The PV-500 Lite is the current equipment of choice, but you must pay extra to upgrade from the standard button camera for it.

total cost from the best source will be around $300 for the basic set up. You would do best to begin by using the equipment that the video MS companies will sent to you on loan, and will help you to learn to use before you spend any money on your own equipment. Some people find that the really hate doing video. Give it at least 3-5 shops, from at least two different companies, before you decide, is my advice. Once you own your own equipment, the shop fees will increase as a bonus for them not having to ship equipment to you.

Poor customer service? Don't get mad; get video.
walesmaven - I purchased a PV-500 Lite with the included button camera. I had a problem the other day where the DVR reported it had no signal, even though the button camera was plugged in, and my shop did not get recorded. I moved the connector around a little bit and the signal came back, but I'm worried it will happen again. I put a rubber band around the entire device to keep the connector still and my last shop went fine. I was thinking of upgrading to the PV-500 ECO for the higher video quality but it sounds like you don't think that is necessary? Is there another button camera that I can get besides the standard one? I've been looking on pimall.com but it's not the most user-friendly site. Thanks in advance for any information.
Stacy,
There is an update on the reasons that some models of the PV-500 are being discontinued, as well as links to sources for the Lite and upgrades cams at [www.videoshoppingnetwork.org]

Also, here is the contact for a fellow who rewires cams at a fraction of the price of a new one; he has wired two for me. Regardless of the picture quality, the wiring is the weak spot. [www.mccalltech.net]

Thank you so much for the links! I am interested in getting the brooch camera just so I am not limited to clothing with black buttons, and then I would have a spare camera. But I will look into sending my button camera in to be checked for loose wiring. It makes sense that this would happend to me - all of my ear buds that I use with my iphone break after a couple of months, and it's the same kind of connector. I'm kind of hard on things.
Ok what exactly is a button camera( I have an idea) and why so expensive. Because of nano tech thing? I am not going to buy anything now , just thinking ahead, Thank u
It's a tiny camera that you can conceal in a button - see [www.pimall.com]. It is use to make a covert video recording.
The level of video and audio required for the MS clients' needs means that we need to use equipment that is currently designated as acceptable. The PV-500 series is pretty much the lwer end of what you would find law enforement and the military using.

Most, if not all, if the broach cameras and similar, will not produce the required quality. The cameras mounted in eye glasses are ruled out because the nature of our assignments requires that we be able to keep the target in the camera frame even when we need to look in a different direction. Same problem with cams mounted in hats. The ones mounted in purses provide too many problems with aiming them to keep the target in the frame 65-90 percent of the time. Also, many targets have actually been told to look for cameras hidden in purses, because that used to be the prescribed method some years ago. I have actually seen targets who peered at the purse when I set it on their desks, and then visibly relaxed when I moved it to the floor. lol

cynd, the button hole camera is the way to go. I have had similar experiences as walesmaven when I felt like targets were a little too interested in studying my purse! The cameras are a little pricey, mine was $300+, but it has been paid for three times over and I have only had it for 3 months. I have great tips on how to make it near ironclad to get great audio and capture the face of the target as opposed to their chest or stomach area and would be happy to share if you take the plunge. Now, when I do video shops, my equipment is secured and aimed so precisely that I have relaxed enough to do the shop as if I did not even have the camera on me. Once you have the right equipment, confidence in the setup, and as sure as you could possibly be that no technical issues will come up, it is a piece of cake.
