Phone Shops

Have any of you ever done a phone shop in which you have to give the narrative but you don't have access to the recording? If you have can you please give me some tips on how to remember everything that is said?

I take notes but I don't do shorthand!

Well I do about 500 phone shops a month. Most of those are not recorded. What I do is make a sheet and make copies of it. I look at the report sheet and use that plus make my own. On the non recorded calls I have to fill the report out right after the conversation or I forget.

thanks for your response, I take notes during the conversation but sometime the calls can last up to 30 minutes and there is no way thatcan take that many notes.

That's a great idea, but is it legal?

I use my hands free cell phone (as long as reception is good) and type using my super-stealthy keyboard that makes practically no noise. The laptop is dying but I will keep it going as long as possible because it's the only keyboard I've ever found that types so quietly!
pammie,
Check out this site for a list of staes where it is and isn't legal. [www.rcfp.org] Add Delaware to the list of "two party consent required" states, bringing the total to 14.

Based in MD, near DC
Shopping from the Carolinas to New York
Have video cam; will travel

Poor customer service? Don't get mad; get video.

Don't tell anyone. No one will know. You're not hurting anyone. Delete it after you write the report.

ann,
Please remove your email address and phone number from your post. You are opening yourself up to scams of all kinds since bots colect these items from all forum for scammers! Anyone forum member who wants to contact you can do so by using the Private Message (PM) function.

What I do is use my voice recorded and use the phone on speaker as stated earlier. Here are my thoughts on the legality of it. The company has agreed for me, as a shopper, to report to them, the client, any and all information pertaining to the shop. As a mystery shopper I will use my resource to report back accurately. The employee has agreed with the employer to perform at a certain standard, and in most cases know they will be mystery shopped at some point while at the company. So with that in mine I believe that is consent. Phone shops are getting harder to get due to the popularity of them gas prices and other reasons. One thing I would say. Sometimes the phone shops are just as hard as the "physical" and pay less so, as with any shop, you need to evaluate the work verse the pay.
I agree with you completely, but that still doesn't make it legal.

I agree with ffrieszell. It may not be legal, but I can't take notes that are detailed enough to do the report and think on my feet at the same time. My verbal memory is awful and I need to record things to make sure I get it right. As long as it's for my own use and I delete it after getting paid, I don't see anything wrong with it. Hopefully there are no phone police monitoring this forum. smiling smiley

For non-recorded shops I use an Olympus microphone that goes in your ear and plugged into my dvr records both sides of the conversation. I use the dvr to record in person shops also for 1) timings and 2) remember everything that is said. It's a life saver. Again, it's only for my own personal use so I see no harm. Plus in my state there's also no consent required.

I think you should download free App or software to your phone which automatically keep records for all your phone calls.

I agree with ffrieszell also. I agree with you that I don't see anything wrong with it. The reason I posted that it's still illegal is that ffrieszell sounded like she had convinced herself that, because of all stated reasons, it must be legal ("So with that in mine I believe that is consent."winking smiley.

I will continue to record calls, right or wrong, legal or illegal because that's the only way I could possibly provide a thorough report. I just needed to state that our believing that it's OK doesn't make it legal.

Below I listed some basic information I found on the Web. Yes we can use it for other things then doing Mystery shops. :-) As most information on this site, depends on where you live and you local laws. If you are crossing into other states it is suggested to use the strictest laws.

"We are frequently asked if it is legal to record a phone call or conversation. The answer is not as simple as you may think.

There are various state and federal statutes that apply to the legality of recording a conversation. The information below is by no means comprehensive. If you are contemplating recording a phone call or conversation, you should seek advice from a legal professional.

The Basics: “One-Party Consent” vs. “Two-Party Consent”

The District of Columbia and 39 states are one-party consent, and 11 states are two-party consent (see table below). A one-party consent state permits individuals to record conversations to which they are a party without informing the other parties that they are doing so. In other words, one-party states allow recording of phone calls with the consent of only one of the parties to the conversation.

Based on the name, you would think that a two-party state would require consent of two parties; however, under most circumstances, all of the parties must provide consent."

Where One-Party Notification Is Required:

Alabama Louisiana Oregon
Alaska Maine Ohio
Arizona Minnesota Rhode Island
Arkansas Mississippi South Carolina
Colorado Missouri South Dakota
DC Nebraska Tennessee
Georgia Nevada Texas
Hawaii New Jeresey Utah
Idaho New Mexico Vermont
Illinois New York Virginia
Indiana North Dakota Wisconsin
Kansas Oklahoma Wyoming
Kentucky

Where Two Party Notification is Required:

California Massachusetts New Hampshire
Connecticut Maryland Pennsylvania
Delaware Michigan Washington
Florida Montana
