Taxes

Is it true that the $600 per year tax cap is for EACH company you work for? I work for several companies now and I was thinking that I had to keep my income low for tax reasons. I know I need to check this out with the IRS, but your comments will help. Thanks!

Hi Donna,

Yes the $600 is per company, but I recommend reporting all your income when doing your taxes. You will get some good tax breaks from the IRS including milage and expenses. Last year I was only paid about $1500 for shopping, but spent a hundred or so, which is a dedection. It is always better to follow the rules, you will have less chance of an audit.

I made almost $9000 MSing last year. Because of the deductions for mileage and expenses, my accountant was able to show a $1000 loss. You can only show a loss for three years though before the IRS calls it a hobby not a business. Even so, I know I can show a minimum income because of the mileage alone. I also get to deduct computer expenses and office supplies. I would suggest finding an accountant you trust to do your taxes and keep accurate records.

I have owned my own business before this shopping thing. I was also a certified tax preparer and worked for H&R Block. Always report all your income, don't get caught in an audit. As the others said, deductions make all the difference in the world. Keep receipts and good records and a business ledger that shows what you spent in expenses and what you made....debits and credits. Keep a milage log for gas credit in your car and enter it in your ledger monthly. You can deduct only percentages of home computers, phones, faxes, and your "office space" square footage devided by your rent or mortgage. You can use that same percentage for electric, also. It is a very small percentage......don't stretch, they get suspicious! The other guy is also correct, only a three year loss. When I did home daycare, I never "made" more than a few hundred a year after deductions. Not much tax on that! LOL! The IRS has great stuff for small business--IRS.gov, small business. I hope some of this helps.
