I use mine all the time. Especially for the shops at Aldi. At other places I process it as a credit card & get 1% back every month.
I love the Paypal debit, too. It will process as either credit or debit. But I didn't know anything about getting 1% back!

After reading this thread, I went to the PayPal site to check out the info for the debit card. It said that I would have to upgrade to the "premier" account. I kept getting caught in useless loops, and couldn't find any specific info on what that entails, or how the "premier" account is different than a "personal" account.

Any tips?

Make sure that you are at the real site Paypal.com. Do you have an account? All you need is a regular paypal account. Let me know.
Yep. I was logged onto my PayPal account earlier, and when I went to apply for the debit card, that's when it indicated that I had to upgrade my account.

What did it say that you had to upgrade it to?
It said I had to upgrade to a "premier" account, whatever that is. The only information I could find on that listed the benefits, but didn't make any comparisons to other account options or mention if there were any fees. The term "upgrade" is what has me dragging my feet, because in every other real life situation, an upgrade usually means fees of some kind are applied.

I think Premier allows you to take credit card payments. The regular, personal accounts only allow you to take 3 credit card payments without upgrading. The premier accounts are meant for businesses.

I think the premier accounts charge fees for most of the incoming payments. You might want to call Paypal and ask. It's been a long time since I was familiar with all the current paypal policies. I have a business account and a personal account but I'm pretty sure I have a debit card on the personal one so they might both be premier.

Warning! if your card is lost and you notify PayPal it does not mean that they will cancell the card. Paypal will continue to allow the card to be used and since it is attached to a bank account they will take money out unless you put a stop payment. There answer to why did they allow the card to continue to be used and withdrsw money out "You only said it was stollen. You didn't tell us to cancell the card so you are responsible for all the charges even though you notified us it was stolen" I heard it with my own ears, couldn't believe it but that was what they said. My friend said they have turned her over to a collection agency becouse she closed her account to stop paypal from taking out payments. This was after telling them 3 times that the card was stolen. Just saying be careful.

Thanks for the tip! I'll have to remember just in case the worst happens with my card.

I started using Paypal a few years ago when I first started doing paid surveys. Many of them have Paypal as a payment option, so I upgraded to either a business or premier account and I was able to get the debit card. I've never had a problem with it!

Did you get charges that were not yours? I will call them on this.
This strikes me as illegal. Debit cards that bear a major credit card logo, as I understand it, have to follow the same rules as a major credit card when one is lost or stolen. A cardholder has no way to prevent a lost/stolen card from being used, so the card issuer is responsible for "turning the card off" and preventing future charges and issuing a new one to the card holder.

I'm not sure what the exact law is, but I've seen enough debit and credit card agreements over the years to know that policies differ slightly. Consistently, they have all stated something to the effect of the card holder either only being liable for up to $XX amount, or liable for $0.00 after the card has been reported lost/stolen. Sometimes the agreement states a time frame - the card holder is liable for fraudulent use up to XX hours after the card is reported lost/stolen, but those have been rare (for me.) The couple times this has happened to me, I've gotten full cooperation from the financial institution issuing the debit/credit card. One time, they even removed charges that occurred in the hour before I called them.

Further, it's the responsibility of the person in the store where the lost/stolen card is being used to determine that the card user has proper ID and the signatures match. I think the financial institutions dump some of this lost income from an improperly accepted card back onto the retailer.
All I know is that the card was reported and she had to close her account 2 months latter because PayPal continued to allow the card to be used. There reason when I was on the call with her was that they had to be told to cancel otherwise she was responsible. Just be aware they have access to your account and use it.

Weeko - Maybe they meant they had to be told to cancel the account, as in shut it down and close it out completely. I'm thinking your friend could have set up another account, different number, and transferred the money to the new account. Just a thought. It's so easy to misunderstand communication.

Please be careful with anything PayPal as their site is not totally secure, despite their claims. Their site was invaded a few years' ago and I expected them to tighten security. Instead, they relaxed it. I can now log in and my password automatically does too. As a result, I have limited the information that I provide; including my checking account information. Just my two cents.
KathyC - my password does not automatically log me in. Maybe it's something in the way your account is set up, or maybe Explorer is remembering your password and applying it. I don't think it's Paypal. I have to furnish a password every time.

My card was stolen 6 weeks ago. Online I reported this and received an email stating that my card was deactivated and a new one would be mailed to me, which it was. I always have to input my password.
Yeah, even my browser thing that is supposed to remember passwords for me, won't fill in the PayPal one. My user name is there, but not the password. I have to type it in every time. My browser thing doesn't fill in any other bank site either.

After reading about losing your PayPal debit card on here, I thought i lost mine last night! Then found it in the car ~ whew!

I have had nothing but problems with Pay Pal from day one.
Setting up the account was easy, they requested additional information so I provided my SS#, and banking info.
Months later they decided to freeze and close my account. When I asked why the representative said I could subpoena the information from their legal department. What???? Talk about coming out of left field!

I emailed the CEO of Pay Pal and E Bay but no reply.
Tried working with Pay Pay help desk but get nothing but generic emails in reply.

My son tried to warn me about their practices but I thought he was just young and didn't
understand how to properly conduct business. Well he was right! Account frozen for 180 days! can't believe it.
I only use the account to receive payments from MSC's but Pay Pal doesn't seem to want to acknowledge that.

I am opting for direct deposit from now on where possible. The amount of frustration Pay Pal has/is causing me is not worth my time. Still can't believe a company can treat customers this way. They are legally within their rights though since they are not classified as a bank or bank holding co.

I've read of things happening to others but never believed this could happen to me.
Oh well, live and learn.
