Hotel shop going to lose power

I'm doing a medium-high end hotel shop tonight. When I checked in, I was told that the hotel would be without power starting at 7AM Monday morning because the local power company has to replace a transformer. I'm doing the shop and will report exactly what happened. For the more experienced shoppers here, do you think I'll have to redo the shop because of the lack of power?

Can't you just check out at 7 and leave or were you supposed to evaluate the breakfast buffet?

I pray it does not occur that the last thing I did before I died was vacuum the house or eat broccoli.
This actually happened to me before on a hotel shop - the day of check out. It was not a planned thing though, it was a failed transformer. It lasted all morning, and I remember walking down through the stairwells with a bellman carrying my luggage. The MSC was very apologetic and thanked me via email for finishing the shop.

I do not think you would have to re-do the shop if you stay there and complete all of the necessary tests. However, how long will the power be out? You would think that if it is a planned thing, this would be a very short-term situation, maybe you could wait it out? Otherwise, it is enough of a guest inconvenience, that I would think they would have people rebook elsewhere.

OK. So, neither the power company nor the hotel has back up generators they can use during the transformer repair? Even a planned transformer replacement will probably take hours.

I see no reason why you have to redo the shop. If the client or MSC wants a reshop, they still have to pay you for this one (assuming you do everything you are required to do) and pay someone (you or another shopper) for the reshop.

If I were you, I would email my scheduler tonight and try to call early tomorrow morning.

Good luck.
I agree that that you should try to reach your scheduler.

That said, I did a hotel for ACL last year where having the buffet breakfast was required. When I arrived, the lobby and breakfast room were both major constructuion zones and all of the furniture was stacked, 20+ feet high and draped with plastic drop cloth at one end of that two story room. I just took pix of the situation and included them in my report. I also took a shot of the letter of apology that was in my room, concerning the lack of food service and the NOISE (yes, I am shouting) in the hotel. Have also arrived at hotel shops to find pool, exercise room, concierge lounge, bar, lobby level rest rooms, and/or other amenities closed for renovation.

Finally, be sure to make your call for having something in your room fixed, or something delivered, before the power goes off.

Enjoy.

PS If you are doing a Holiday Inn. take a pillow from home. When all of them were recently renovated, they all got the world's worst, lumpiest, least maliable, pillows imaginable.

I've had that happen twice!

First time the power went out as we sat down for dinner at the hotel. They closed the restaurant until the power came back around midnight. I submitted the shop without the dinner and the MSC had no problem with it.

Recently, the power went out for a few hours in the AM on a 2 night stay. It took down all of the phone systems at the hotel as well, so there was no wake up call, and apparently they had an electric hot water heater, 'cause there was no hot water all morning either. I did what I could and walked to front desk to complain about something non-electrical in the room. The spa was completely lit with candles during my massage appointment, which was actually kind of nice.

Strangely, the electronic door locks work when the power is out. I guess they are battery powered.....
Thanks for the advice. I have a call in to my scheduler. The only thing I wasn't able to complete was getting a group rate for a family reunion, because the group sales agent wasn't in since their computer had no power. They did have the buffet today, but it was all cold items.

The hotel's emergency generator had the hall lights lit and power for the front desk, although it was "sketchy" enough that they kept having to reboot their computer. I called for a wake-up call at 8, knowing the power would be off and the phone system wouldn't be working. They didn't send anyone around to knock on my door. The hotel's wi-fi battery died about 8:30.

Took care of the maintenance call Sunday night...and it was a legit call.

Am home now and have just finished the report. It really turned out to be an amazing experience. The staff all had their "A" games today and one in particular had such a bubbly personality that she could make Scrooge forget about complaining.

Glad it went well for you. I hope to do a hotel shop someday -- actually I have my eye on some fairly lucrative-sounding timeshare shops that sound interesting. Just need to find a time when I can be gone two nights.

The petsitter will need a petsitter, LOL. (I actually have good neighbors who are happy to look in on my cats if I go out of town.)

From what I have heard about those timeshare shops you really should try one. So far I can never coordinate one close enoughsad smiley

I've been salivating over them, but just haven't been able to manage a weekend off. Sounds like a dead easy shop -- just record the presentation and send them the recording? I can do that with my eyes shut -- literally, LOL.

The wind chill will be -20 here tonight. You can imagine how a time share in FL sounds to me right now.
It has been raining down here and very humid. What happened to my two weeks of "winter?" -20 is too cold for me but I would love some 40's or 50's. I have a whole wardrobe that I hardly ever get to wear. I know you guys feel sorry for me, right? ;-)
